"remember both Reno & Custer done exactly the same things, but with different results, charge, skirmish, run, fight, but only one man came though it all to tell."
Bullsh...t !
Reno made a rout after 30 minutes of fighting, however he was in the best defense position of all the battlefield !
Reno offered the back of his men to the ennemy.
Reno didn't put any rear guard TWO TIMES in the same fight.
Reno didn't go to a gait when he made his "charge" and most of his bataillion was massacred in the river.
As Utley said, Reno failed to all the test of leadership ever. He is probably one of the worst officers American has ever had.
And Frederick Benteen is a treator and a liar, and the blood of 210 men are on his hands.

Reading eliminates ignorance. SOACM Seriously ? Another great conclusion. I have just read 250 books about LBH, but I didn't read one line of you about the battle. Are you learning to write, as you learnt to count a mile in kilometers ?

May I respectfully suggest you might want to consider reading Charles K. Mill's book on Benteen? It might shed some light for you.

May I respectfully suggest you might want to consider reading John Carroll "The Benteen goldin letter", or Jeffry Wert, "The Controversial Life of Custer" or the Reno's Court of Inquiry chapter in Robert Nigthengale's book, or Sklenar LBH.. ?
I'm not considering Benteen for his entire life, but for one day. June 25th. And the aftermath of the battle.

Custerstillstands, did not the grey troop charge, form skirmish line, turn there backs to LSH,did the troops from calhoun Hill, not skirmish, turn there backs, and head for the command [picked by GAC]and were they not routed. Reno and Benteen lost men on the hill also, but as you say, they had a defense position, one that the Indians were not keen on attacking. Reno was a bad choice, but again, who done the ordering !

Xav, my question was whether the 7th had watered their horses that morning, i.e., the 25th. Was it a dry camp?
And then you said this rambling nonsense:
"Benteen watered the horses two times. No discussion for the first. But the second was useless, and even soldiers and officers were surprised of Benteen slow march. According to Godfrey, Weir became upset and obliged his own company to move. after that, Benteen was obliged to move too. Utley : "Nothing can give excuse to Benteen's behavior".
Where did Benteen water his horses two times? The morass I know of, but what was the first location?
Utley is a fabulous histortian, however, his opinions and mine do not mesh 100% of the time. As an avid researcher, I am sure Utley understands that there is room for disagreement, unlike some I can name in my brief time on this board.
As far as Wynkoop being a "liar", my sentiments are that opinions are like that portion of the body we all sit on - everyone has one. Read your history silly! Wynkoop was told that the Ft. Lyons region was "safe". He was then relieved from command. The SUCCEEDING commander of the post is the one who allied with Chivington.
Xav, you have opinions, however, you do not quote anything but secondary sources, which many have pointed out as hearsay. To be a historian, you must not "cherry-pick" quotes which fit your theory and leave the discordant quotes well behind.
Prove it by primary sources or valid research documentation and more people will listen to you without laughing.
Best of wishes,
Billy

Bigpond--
Libbie never visited LBH during her lifetime. By the 1920's or so (I believe in time for the 50th anniversary of the battle), she did publicly state that she felt that the Indian policy that the US enacted during her husband's life was unjust.
