Tom Tompkins made the excellent (I think) suggestion that the LBHA website might provide a place for Indian Wars reenactors to exchange information. Please consider this your forum and let me know what else we can provide on the website.

Diane: Many thanks for the new re-enactors forum, I for one will be checking in daily. Is it possible to post pictures? It's one thing to read about what is needed to get involved in Indian Wars re-enacting but seeing pictures of what type of uniforms should be worn, type of firearms, horse tack, etc., would be a big help to those wanting to get started. During the June Real Bird re-enactment there was some concern about how some of the re-enactors were dressed. It does take away from the show when you see someone riding a paint horse with a western saddle, dressed like a mule skinner. I ride with Dave Mayfield's E- Company 7th Cavalry. When we ride out what you see is pretty much what E-Company looked like on June 25, 1876.
Joining a Civil War re-enacting unit is also a good place to learn cavalry tactics and John Doran's Cavalry School in Washinton state is excellent. If you prefer to be a dismounted trooper you can join F-Company 7th Cavalry. These guys come from all over the country and offer a great opportunity to folks who don't ride.
In August I'll be in Gettysburg with my charger "Manny". We'll be with H-Company 2nd US Cavalry during the "Living History" weekend. This group is without quesion one of the top mounted re-enactor units in the country and most of them are planning to travel to Montana next June for and ride in the Real Bird re-enactment. Please feel to contact me anytime for information concerning uniforms, weapons, how to rent a horse at the Real Bird re-enactment, who to contact, etc. Tom

This forum was a great idea from a great guy! ;D Photos can be displayed, but they must be on a server so they have an address. Here is an example in code of how you would insert a photo in a message: www.lbha.org/images/Indian.jpg[/img) (The last parenthesis should be replaced by a bracket to make the photo show.) If you don't have access to a server, send me the photos, and I can post them in the forum for you (be sure to specify where you want the photo to appear) or, if there is a lot of information to display, I'll be glad to develop a section of the LBHA website for you. Please let me know how I can help! Diane

Minus the gray horses of course!
In all honesty coming from Civil War reenactments, E troop was one of the best I saw there this year. Congrats on all of your impressions Tom. I look forward to meeting up with you guys again next year.

Just one bit of advice to re-enactors: forget the hat brass and cords. I see way too much of these; the brass crossed sabers was worn on the forage cap, not the campaign hat. The yellow hat cord was seldom ever worn either. Quartermaster depots had stockpiles of these cords that the troopers did not draw. If they did they were quickly discarded.
Recently while on vacation I was able to view "Little Big Horn: The Untold Story" on History Channel. I could only shake my head when the re-enactor playing Major Reno sported the crossed sabers on a civilian straw hat! C'mon, you guys are supposed to know better.

On that note a big problem with the Real Bird Reenactment is the lack of central leadership within the Cavalry. If there was someone in charge who all of the different groups could respect who could do authenticity inspections/implement standard drill it would be much different.
Unfortunatly with all of the different groups that come each year, the division between the Cav and the politics putting something like that into motion is hard to do.
This year I gathered that the only real figure everyone (E company, Custer Clan, Band Box Troop, SASS, the Real Birds and all others) respects and listens to is Steve Alexander (General Custer) but even he wears his suspenders over his campaign shirt, which most soldiers of the period ESPECIALLY officers did not do. The braces were considered part of your underwear.
ANYWAY
to end my rant its fair to say without someone in charge who everyone will listen to as an authority figure and respect little mistakes such as that will always be a part of reenacting. Which is why it should be the duty of each of us, as reenactors to better our impressions.

This is new. A good idea really. You guys that do this need to start a discussion on the people, why's and hows of your trade. Especially when reenacting the LBH.

Thanks Diane. I just get so sick and tired of the petty things that go on. Sometimes I need a break! A long break, if you know what I mean?
I will try to stay the course this time. And I do have unfullfilled commitments here to others in the PM areas. I will try not to upset anyone with my silly notions. I've been there, done that!
I do hope that someone answers my questions here! It's a start. Perhaps not the best. But then these are questions that I have always wanted to ask them. There are other questions too, but if they are too shy, then I guess its another bust, huh?

Howdy: Seems the re-enactment at the Real Birds is in somewhat of an uproar. No one seems to know who's in charge and the cavalry re-enactors are doing their own thing. I think anytime you allow folks (Cav School & SASS) to use the re-enactment as a means to hustle some bucks bad things are going to happen in regards to the purpose of the event. Of course there are two sides to everything and some will say the Cav School and SASS are exposing new re-enactors to the Indian Wars but here's the problem. When folks are paying to be there who's going to tell them they can't wear this or that or that their horsemanship is lousy. It is a bit embarassing to see how some of the guys look at show time. Thank goodness for E Company! What's the answer to all this? Only the Real Birds can charge how things are run and if they are not willing, well, the show goes on and the serious re-enactors will probably go elsewhere. Will I be back for the 130th, you better believe it. I'll ride with E Company like I have the past two years and turn a blind eye to the farbs. I'll do my part in showing the tourists what the 7th looked like in 1876. Tom Tompkins

With just under 3 months until the 2006 reenactment for those who will be participating I hope that you have all the needed gear. I myself am still purchasing and have only a few more items left. If anyone is planning on being dismounted please contact me so that you can get familiarized with the what, when and where if you have never been there before. Get in touch with either myself or Col Keogh if you will be mounted. Though I will not be mounted I can put you in contact with Col. Keogh.
