Grahamew,
This is a really good likeness of him, I've never seen it before. And I never noticed the scar on his chin before. Wonder if he got it AT LBH ? It doesn't show up in any of the earlier pictures I've seen on him.

Anyone know what the earliest photo of Gall is? Those taken in this series, perhaps?

I just received the new Gall book by Robert W. Larson (University of Oklahoma Press) a couple of days ago. It confirms that the photographs from the series Grahame posted above are perhaps the earliest of Gall. I have seen no picture of him before 1881, when he surrendered at Fort Buford, too.
However, I think that in general there is more possibility that an unknown early photo of Gall could be discovered than of any other Northern Sioux leader. Despite his hostile acts against whites, he often visited forts, agencys and posts for trade or as in 1868 to council treaties.
By the way, a good book worth reading, even though I am not yet through...

Thanks. The reason I asked was because I've seen the picture below associated with Barry's comments (those about Gall's head being unadorned and with his shirt open) about taking his first photo of Gall, yet I think this is a photo of an older man: Of course, I've also seen it credited to Goff in 1896 - two years after Gall's death! Have you any idea when this dates from? He looks young here too (and that's a curious warbonnet!).

Grahame, The photo of Gall with shirt open and loose hair is said to be Barry´s favourite one of him. He used it in most of his advertisements.
The shirt and the war-bonnet in the Goff photo (could it be also taken by Barry and selled by Goff?) look like they are given to Gall by the photographer to make him appear more “indian-like”. They don´t seem to fit. Isn´t it a Cheyenne war-bonnet? I don´t know the date, but the inscription Ft. Yates would indicate that it was taken after Gall´s surrender in 1881.
The other two photos are not of Gall but of Rain-in-the-Face, I think.

If you take a look at the white shirt in the hair-loose photo... in the photo taken at Ft. Buford in 1881 with hair wrapped in otter fur, he seems to wear the same kind of shirt. Could it be that both photos were taken at the same session?

I thought the Fiske one was of Rain and was reluctant to post it!
I know Barry thought a lot of the photo because it's used on his studio imprint on the back of his photos, but he looks older.
I'll remove the Rain photos to cover my embarrassment!

Dietmar,
I totally agree with you about the Crow King photo, its magnificent. I saw it several months ago and thought it one of the best Indian portraits I'd seen. It's interesting that both men appear to be wearing rather elaborate shirts that look rather more like a garment that would be worn by a woman, { many of the Pawnees in some of their photographs seem to be wearing similar kinds of garment,} I wonder if some travelling sales man came by with a job lot. Have you any idea when these two photos might have been taken? I have to say that when I first saw the Crow King image my hopes rose that there might be other photographs of Low Dog out there waiting to surface.

If what I read at Cowan´s auction site is correct, Gilbert moved to North Dakota and opened his studio not before November 1881.
Comparing the faces of Crow King and Gall with their portraits of 1881, I would say that there is not much time in between. Perhaps the photos were made early 1882, I would guess.
Dietmar
P.S.: Ah, yes... I think there must be more photos of Gilbert, Low Dog would be great!

Notice the man's arm at the right of this uncropped photo of Gall. I presume it's Captain Clifford who accompanied him to Barry's studio.
