Does this ring any bells with anyone?
A photograph -- I think by D. F. Barry -- of two young Cheyenne women, both probably about 20 years old. One is seated, in 3/4 profile, facing left; the other is standing, as I recall. The slightly unusual thing is that both are dressed rather elegantly in white-woman-style clothing, and have their hair arranged in fashionable Victorian style. I should add that it's a studio portrait rather than an outdoor shot.
I came across it a couple of years ago on a website that had many other Barry photographs of Indians, but have never been able to find it, or the website, again. If anyone knows this photo, I'd be really grateful for any hint as to where it might be!

Elisabeth, I looked through the Barry photographs at the Denver Public Library. (http://photoswest.org/) I found this one, although it fits not exactly to your description: photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00100323+B-323Hope it helps Dietmar

Dietmar,
Thank you for trying! Great photo -- but no, it's not the same one. The one I'm after isn't a full-length shot, but more like 3/4 length. And the seated woman's face looks a little like that of the woman who appears (usually captioned as "an Arapaho woman") in that group shot with Sherman, Sheridan, Tappan etc -- I'll see if I can find that and post it, so that you can see what I mean.
Thanks once again!

I was going to post that one too - saw it in the Heski book. Good pictures; infuriating documentation, as is often the case.

Needless to say, I then couldn't find the other photo!!! At last, here it is: tinyurl.com/rctnhThe seated woman in the photo I'm searching for is facially very like this woman -- but with a happier expression. (Not smiling, exactly, but with a bit of a twinkle in her eye.)
