It just amazes me that someone who had such a long and eventful life which spanned so much of the US-Indian events lived so far into the 20th century and there are still people alive who knew him. So true -- the current superintendent of LBH, Darrell Cook, is the great great grand nephew of Beard. Darrell remembers sitting on Beard’s lap when he was a young boy and hearing stories. Now, that’s close. And, remember also, that Robert Utley actually met Charles Windolph as well.

If anyone does get to the Old Fort Meade Museum, I'd like to know if the buckskin jacket Beard took at the battle is among the collection. I've written them but have received no answer.

Another noted Indian, who I believe is still living is Johnson Holy Rock who's father was at the LBH, albeit as a young child. Johnson was featured on the PBS documentary LAST STAND AT LITTLE BIG HORN and related stories told to him by his father about the LBH. Talk about a direct link to the past.

In 1997, Wolfgang and his wife visited South Dakota and Fort Meade. Wolfgang took these pictures of Dewey Beard's warshirt with leggings and the dress of his wife. Thank you, Wolfgang!
