Thank you, Ephriam. I think we were all hoping your would add your voice to this thread.
I believe you are correct that Deb Wood has not identified the Page Two Photos and would appreciate any help she can get.

Ephriam, thank you so much....actually, none of the photos in the Charles Madison Shelton album were labeled correctly. They had been put into the "wrong" pockets where family members photos had been at one time. On the one page name "White Swan" appeared written above an empty pocket the photo. You've been very helpful. In case the images can be modified for better viewing, I will send them to Diane! Thank you all, Debbie Shelton Wood

This site features several Yankton leaders of that period - assuming Unfortunately, it's hard to make out the features on Debbie's photo to get a match on that middle figure. He Walks Mad? Struck by the Ree? www.amphilsoc.org/library/guides/shindler/index.htm

Diane,
Are you still following this thread?
I'm interested in your finding those photos. Part of my family came form Virginia. We trying to track down a connection between White Swan (the scout) and our family.

I can't tell from looking at the different photos shown here, but there is a famous picture of White Swan, I think the third submitted by guest Don Blake of him holding the war club, and it can be seen in the photo that one of White Swan's hands was practically blown off. I think the right hand. It was blown off during the valley fight or in the timber. His family still lives on the land at Reno Crossing, or so I have been told, the Bird in Ground family. Maybe they could be of help in identifying any photos.

The Autry National Center www.autrynationalcenter.org/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=ks has a clearer image of the first picture in the Charles Madison Shelton album . Unfortunately, there was no information on the subject or photographer. As Ephriam said, the man looks Yankton and most likely photographed by C. L. Hamilton. I've attached a comparison.

For what it's worth, similar shirts/jackets made from stroud and clearly influenced by US military jackets, are worn by some of the Yanktons in Shindler's portraits of prominent Yanktons from 1867: www.amphilsoc.org/library/mole/s/shindler.htm

Good eye, Bob! I went to the link -- what did you type in as your search to get you to the photograph?

Ephriam- www.autrynationalcenter.org/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=record&id=M599677&type=101I found this awhile back and when I saved it all I had was a number that doesn't help to find it. I typed in "Indian" and got over 9000 hits. The photo in question was on page 141. The description says- "photograph, mounted, United States of America (nation), 1860-1905, 90.253.1846.10 (Museum of the American West) -- Found in Remarks: Carte de visite of a North American Indian, 1860-1905. Handwritten caption on verso: BIG BEAR." So I was wrong, there is a name, great! I've not tried it, but the key words are "photograph, mounted" and "United States of America (nation)". Maybe "Big Bear" will work too. There are a number of great early Pawnee images in this group as well. grahamew- When I first saw this photo, I was thinking of the Shindler portrait of Little Thunder. Very similar outfit. -Bob

I'm sure that site must have more gems, but it's either a real pain to navigate around or I'm just not with it.
Where did you find the early Pawnee photos?
