To all posting about Mathey: I am a blood relation to E. G. Mathey. I have some family info and period photos that I would be willing to share copies of with anyone with a serious interest in studying his life and family.
Its been fun to read this thread. There is lots of good info, but beware some of the stuff isn't exactly correct. example: Mathey is absolutely a french name...its not anglified. I started to get riled up with the discussion about returning his remains to France. I'm sure it was a figure of speach, but if it had been true, there would have been a fight.
Interested in the info? let me know how to contact you

Of interest for Southfork: Cowan's Auctions has several Lt. Mathey items for auction on Dec. 7 and 8, 2006. They can be seen at www.historicamericana.com. Go to "Visit Auction Catalog" and the Mathey items begin on page 22. Of interest for Elizabeth: on page 23 they have Myles Keough's replacement 1860 Papal Medal, the Pro Petri Sede.

KarlKoz, Thanks, I have been in contact with Cowan's for a couple of weeks now. They have very graciously agreed to let me have my photo taken with his sword even if it probably will out of reach for me to buy. It will be worth the 500+ miles I have to drive one way just to hold it. southfork

KarlKoz,
Thanks! Yes, and they've got his infantry manual from his time in Italy, as well. Lovely to see.

KarlKoz
Thanks for the link. I have gone through all of the pages and all of the items. If I win one of our big lotteries this week, I will clear out the whole lot of Seventh-related stuff - and a few of the weapons as well. Gee, I wish I were wealthy, not even rich, just wealthy.

I attended the Cowans auction last week and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Wes Cowan and his crew are a class act. I enjoyed holding my great-great-great uncle's sword and meeting others who knew the meaning of garryowen.

Do you mean the saber that was sold for $34,500?!
BTW, Keogh's Papal medal went for $920.

I think Mathey's sword would have gone even higher had the provenance been a little tighter. . Keogh's Papal medal was a bargain at 920, but I had already spent too much on the Mathey with Co K picture (ex Carroll/Swanson collections). BTW, Mathey and others are carrying 1860's in that picture. The biggest bargain of the auction imo was 200 for an Edgerly West Point CDV. . Wes Cowan and I had a picture taken together with the sword. They (Cowans) are supposed to send me a copy. I'll see what I can do about posting it when it arrives. Cheers

For some mad reason, Cowan's are now demanding registration to view their auction info, and I haven't the patience. Anyone happen to remember what Keogh's infantry manual sold for?
$920 certainly sounds like a bargain for the Papal medal. Amazing. Wish I'd bid!

Thanks, Karl! Somebody did well that day ...
It was most interesting to see that. I know that languages were on the curriculum at St. Patrick's College, Carlow, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything; the manual, however, suggests he could read French well enough to profit by the instructions in it, which is nice to know.

i received this picture from Cowan's today. That's me on the left. Note that the 1860 scabbard is nickeled with a later hanger reconfiguration. I hope this photo post works. Southfork
