Some people are taking the Custer State Park name change very seriously. An online petition has been posted at www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?Park. WARNING: The petition allows its "signers" to comment, and many of the comments are typically ignorant about Custer. The petition is sponsored by www.unitednativeamerica.com. I am very tired of the Custer-bashing, most of which is based upon misinformation. Should we bother to start an anti-name change petition?#nosmileys

This battle will never die. The people wont let it! What an appropriate thing. Let Chief Crazy Horse have his monument, and let Custer always be there as a memorial to the great battle/struggle that occured between them. Can't anyone see that it would be wrong to change it. What a poetic match! And what a crazy thing it would be to change it!!! It is so appropriate to both the Native American and the White causes and in the interest of history to preserve and protect, and not destroy that which so naturally should be. What a tragedy and travesty of error and an injustice if this comes about. I am for the Native American causes, but this one smacks of insanity. And if my name sake were still alive i'm quite sure that he would agree with me! ;D YES BY ALL MEANS bother to start an anti-name change petition!!!! This issue is bigger than the State of South Dakota. People from around the world should write, call, lobby to the State representatives of South Dakota and inform them of the significance of their actions.

Two Moons--
Just an FYI--Tom Daschle is no longer senator from the State of South Dakota. He was defeated last November by some Republican--whose name I've forgotten. Daschle used to serve as Senate Majority/Minority leader, so it was a bit of a shock for him to lose.
Regards, Leyton McLean

Thanks Leyton: I had forgotten about that. But this did come from the official South Dakota State place. Oh well!!! I'll correct it, I don't remember his name either, thanks again...

I am from South Dakota. Thune is the one who defeated Daschle. Tim Johnson is the other senator and Stephanie Herseth is in the House.

Thanks Scott. I did find Thune, but it appears contact is limited to the tele. I'll see what I can find out about Herseth.

Michigander --
Will you share some of the responses you received from the South Dakota politicians, please? It sounds as if this may be a non-issue, but I never expected them to change the name of Custer Battlefield . . . .
