Dear All
I have now rediscovered where I actually found the reported remark from Custer to Keogh about it being worth losing half their horses if they could keep the Indians running.
It was/is in Peter Panzeri's book. He does not quote a source but I guess it has to be Goldin which is still a shame.
I now note that this book which has nice graphics and generally follows RA Fox's line does manage to slip in a few controversial facts/quotes such as the one above. He also has Custer definitely told by Curley and Mitch Bouyer that Reno has been defeated. This is probably even more controversial although I guess possible.
Regards
Mike

Gray also stated that Curly and Boyer said Reno's rout and reported it to Custer, thus the "famous" feint at the ford to get the Indians off of Reno.
The more I think about it the more I doubt it. Why fake an attack, then fall back see what happens? It only gives the warriors more time to gather and Custer loosing the offensive.

Soldiers went into the water and fell back (according to Goes Ahead). Means ford scouting.

Wasn't it because of the Cheyenne hidden in the brush who were shooting at them? And they may have had repeating rifles, giving the impression there were more than the soldiers thought.
