If you examine Wooden Leg's story in "The Custer Myth" he has the soldiers shooting each other and themselves. It is on page 105 of my copy of the book.
I did think Wooden Leg's account seemed unlikely (he has the majority of the soldiers killing themselves or each other) but if he saw something of this nature happening it might be so unusual for the Cheyenne culture that he overstates the extent of it.

Yes possible.
Or maybe it's the story about the Indians who didn't want to admit having killed anyone because they feared what could the Whites think... Seems unlikely anyway, because many of them talked about mutilation, beheading etc.
But WL could have been schocked or angered by two soldiers who shot themselves before he could arrive. He couldn't "count a coup" any more. Maybe
