Volley fire was used in the musket era, as a fire control measure. The Brown Bess musket was best used at 50 meters or less. The phrase wait until you see the whites of their eyes is an identifier that they are close enough to hit. Volley fire was still used in the ACW, but the transition from smoothbore to rifle was still in progress It became obsolete by the end of the war.
Sound in battle has ebbs and flows. There are times I can't hear folks on the radio because of background noise. There are also times of dead silence. It is odd that the pucker factor is higher in the quiet times, means both sides looking for targets and moving.
So a burst of fire in a firefight can sound like a volley.
I believe there was controlled fire on L/C/N ridge. They were fighting far outside effective range. 800 meters with a max 300 meter weapon is like throwing a rock at the moon. Mass fire at least lets your enemy know you are there. Note we have no record of any enemy casualties from this fire, outside of Martini's horse.
Note even in ACW, no one used rifle fire as a signal. They did use several versions of cannon fire, like the 3 shots that initiated Picket's charge.
In Ranger school one of the first missions is to conduct an ambush. If the patrol leader states in the order that he will initiate the ambush by firing his rifle, he is toast. A cadre member will shoot a round as an accidental discharge and the whole patrol blazes away at an empty forest. Several times I witnessed a student have an accidental discharge totally on their own. You need a signal that is unique and signifies that it is a signal, not a random event.

Nice bird, the last time I got a ride in a similar, older bird, was in the 80's. Death traps with zero glide ability, but great utility. Thanks for the memory, as Bob Hope may have sung.

You made me laugh William. When I was in staging we were doing night battle drills and I was on a listening post. We had blanks and so did the approaching enemy. Well Cool, that was his last name, fires. I called him all kinds of names because blanks were only going to give away our position. Cool responds by throwing rocks and soon all four of us are throwing rocks at the white flashes in front of us. Then we run back to the main body. Jacked up and out of breath an officer asks me what was out there. I stated there are millions of them coming up the ridge we were on. In a very stern voice I heard Marine there is not a million of anything coming up that ridge. I looked at his collar and saw a single star. I took a deep breath and told him I saw around 20 muzzle flashes. I have no clue who he was and I am glad he never asked my name.

AZ, (...possess.pron. referring to a thing or things belonging to or associated with the speaker...) I would ask you to be patient when you read a passage that is unfamiliar to you and is expressed in idiomatic English. If that is too convoluted for you, you might try silence...! Robb You're kidding and just digging a deeper hole or mine. Something for you to "keep in mine". You screwed up and can't admit it. What you should have said is that sometimes we type words without consciously seeing that they are wrong. I am sure we all know the difference between your and you're but it is easy to type your for you're.
Better advice is what William stated and we should just ignore you because you contribute nothing.

Nice bird, the last time I got a ride in a similar, older bird, was in the 80's. Death traps with zero glide ability, but great utility. Thanks for the memory, as Bob Hope may have sung. Regards, Tom The copilot for that aircraft was Dell Dailey, who at the time was BN CDR. He ended up commanding JSOC. And the day I retired, he came late and gave me hell for a tactical error I made on this mission. I was told we had incoming bad guys and arranged a hasty defense facing east. He was reporting an enemy element to SW, that none of my guys on the ground saw. SO he blames me for his bad report. All good, no friendly casualties, and in a future story, a bored B52 pilot was listening into the spec ops channel, in violation or orders, and killed over 100 bad guys. Ummm, a lot more than 100. War has many weird branches and sequels.

AZ, I can't ignore you, AZ, you're too much fun...! Robb TR Second error Robb. William recommended that we ignore you. Apparently you made a comprehension mistake also. Down from an A- to B- now. No one suggests to ignore those that contribute. The suggestion is to ignore those that are trolls. TR is what I will call you which is an abbreviation for Troll Robb. Steve

AZ, Good, ignore all you wish and I'll continue to pick apart the false narratives presented here as ...History. Cheers, Robb TR I think you need some help. Again you failed to distinguish the difference between what someone recommended and what I have done. You tell me to ignore all I wish as if I stated it. You are confused. Another example . Do you think picking on a historical fiction book that you never read is picking apart the false narratives presented here. You are losing it Robb. What false narrative do you believe you have picked apart? This thread is the use of volley fire as distress signal in the US Army. Wish you the best of luck in getting yourself taken care of. Steve,
You're funny and great entertainment for the uninformed. As for losing it, Steve, you first have had to find it to begin with in order to have lost it and you're no closer to that hurdle than when you began composing your version of "History". But, nevertheless, you're funny to read as long as one doesn't swallow your bile....

But, nevertheless, you're funny to read as long as one doesn't swallow your bile.... Robb TR Another example of an apparent loss of understanding on your part. You should "keep it mine". That statement above is about as dumb a statement as "keep it mine". So if you are losing the ability to make sense your argument is the "you first have had to find it to begin with in order to have lost it". So if I agree with you then it means your never had any sense because you never found any to lose. What is important here is the sharing of information and you do none of that and expect us to "keep it mine" that you have 700 books. I would think most people are more concerned with sharing data discovered and opinions rather than posts from some so called academic spell checking grammar checker. "Keep it in mine." What version of "History" are referring to? I think another symptom of you losing it. An academic shouldn't be making these kinds of mistakes. Are you sure you know where you are at? It's The use of volley fire as distress signal in the US Army". Regards Steve

Robb states Montrose has a clown reputation here. Robb is a liar in my opinion.
Montrose has several posts here in this thread which are on topic. Robb has zero posts on this thread topic which is also the sum total of all his informative posts.
Myself I view William as a hero in his service to this county and appreciate his military skills in analysis.
