Diane, Dont forget the Navajo code talkers. They spoke in their own language and the Japanese could never figure it out. They were a fine resource and help to those fighting in the Pacific. Be Well Dan

Agreed. The exhibit probably features them as well. Unfortunately, I won't get to see it.

Benteen;
I once saw a fairly long list over all the Native Nations who supplied the US Army with code talkers. Comanche, Hopi, Assiniboine, Seminole and Lakota were all used, but Navajo was the one code never broken after what I`ve read. Must be just as strange a language as Danish.

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma contend that their members were the first soldiers to provide code talking for the US Army. These men were introduced in October of 1918 the last few days of WW I. I have listed a site below which provides additional information. Regards Dave www.nmai.si.edu/education/codetalkers/html/chapter4.html

Noggy/Dave,
Thank you gentlemen, I was unaware that any other tribes except the Navajo were code talkers.
Be Well Dan

Dan Good to hear from you again. In fact there were 10 plus tribes that provided code talkers for the military which is amazing when one considers how they were treated by the Whites. Regards Dave

It`s surreal to think that in the 40s, during WW2, there were still som "hostile" Apaches left in the Sierra Madres while other NAs worked as code talkers for the US Army against the Axis.
