I still don't have a good understanding WHY Custer would still be attempting to cross.
Still seeing the village... thus very large. No way his little band is going to bust up that village. Is he still trying to prevent them from leaving... or trying to support Reno in some way, or what exactly?

Robb I was wondering why you do not respond to questions regarding the battle, its participants and the campaign itself? Obviously you are very knowledgeable about this event but only reply with snippets or witticisms. I have often found that when I attempt to be witty it turns out to be s&^$&&y.
So put down the crayons and take up your shovel and join us in the sand box! Love to have your company and insights. Regards Dave

Robb I understand your reluctance but wish you would change your mind. Sharing information is never a bad thing even if you think the listeners would not appreciate your efforts. Not passing on knowledge makes all of us poorer in the long run. So perhaps you may reconsider later on. Regards Dave

Plus... when I am/might be wrong I want to know why that is so in the opinion of the other person(s). I too am secure in my thoughts/knowledge of the battle... but always willing to improve it.

Is he still trying to prevent them from leaving... or trying to support Reno in some way, or what exactly? DucemusTiming study is one way to develop ideas about what went on. What did Custer or Keogh and Yates know of events upriver and what did they expect of Reno, Benteen and McDougall? Without a shadow of doubt, Benteen was ordered to go to Reno in the valley and be followed by Mathey and McDougall. This expectation on the part of the five companies commanders figured in thinking - at some point. Fainting at the ford was Gray's thinking and previously the flavour of things was and remains for an aggressive and folish drive further down river to western fords which led to disaster. Before this there was the way of things discovered by Walter M. Camp and before him, Edward S. Curtis. The first Cheyenne account of the battle from 1876 is a good place to begin because it is troublesome to decode but a worthwhile study. This is the version given by Maj. John D. Miles the Indian Agent. Linked here Winfield Courier, August 24, 1876. It is hard work and fraught with problems of interpretation. Is river really river or is it ravine or coulee? Is the valley fight referred to or is it all Custer fight? What Custer, Keogh and Yates had ordered and expected may be central to reasoning out what they did.

Still utterly confusing.
Calls for Benteen to hurry. Where does he suppose Benteen is located? He was sent to the left hills. The first units he is bound to get to is Reno's command (whether they are doing ok or not). Is he supposed to support Reno's attack? That is what he told Reno (the rest of the outfit will support you). Is he supposed to rush to Custer like the note says? To help Custer: attack the village/hold off the warriors/cut off the village leaving??? What? At that time he has to KNOW that Reno's smallish command will not be able to do much with such a large village/number of warriors. Custer should bug out back to Reno with much haste IMO.

Hey hero... when I clicked that link it brought me right back here DucemusTruly sorry........... www.ausbcomp.com/~bbott/Cowley/Oldnews/WORTMAW/SIOIND.htm Benteen was sent to Reno with the packs to and rearguard Company B to follow. The point which is often lost is how things were at the time the note was written. Also, Custer knew that Benteen was on his back trail. Martin was told to follow it to find Benteen. The note says B bring pacs and not ps bring pacs - otherwise the note makes no sense. If Benteen misread it, he misread it.
