I'm pleased to report that the burial location of Sgt. Hanley, a Medal of Honor recipient for Little Bighorn, has been identified thanks to the efforts of American Legion Post 69 in Malden, Massachusetts. The members of the post purchased an MOH foot stone for his gravesite. There will be a ceremony in his honor on June 25 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. See www.littlebighorn.info/Cavalry/Hanley.htm. Diane

Hanley died in Boston on September 13, 1923, which is also where he was born. He had lived at 23 Green Street. Apparently, however, his burial place was not known or forgotten.
Best wishes, Fred.

Willy, I apologize for the delay in responding. My husband and I just returned from our Montana trip last night, and I didn't check the boards while I was gone. It was good to see old friends and meet a few new faces from these boards! To answer your question above, one of the members of American Legion Post 69 wrote to me about Hanley. After the initial set up of my website, LittleBighorn.info, I've found many of the burial locations thanks to people writing to me from all over the country. I am very grateful to them all. I saw such an email today, advising of the burial location of John Robert Cooper, previously John H. Cooper. His updated listing can be seen at www.littlebighorn.info/Cavalry/NameC.htm along with the newly found burial location for William Thomas Craycroft and the name of the mausoleum that holds the remains of John C. Creighton. Diane

Diane-considerable difficulty navigating this site--littlebighorn.info ? lbha.proboards.com ? Asks to prove I'm human--then comes up with Kelly Blue Book or Jesus' last words, and Google search &c. &c. Just wanted to say that the John Robert Cooper who died in Iowa 24 Sep 1903 appears born in 1854 in Wisconsin - Ancestry & Census records.

Willy,
It's too bad you had a problem, but I have nothing to do with the ProBoards navigation.
The three sources I consult -- Nichols, Wagner, and Williams -- all have Cooper born in Ireland. If you have proof otherwise, please post it.

Happy 4th ** Diane, No proof. But all three sources seem to have followed the lead of Ken Hammer's 1995 Men With Custer, which shows "John H. Cooper" and mentions his daughter Flossefa. Otherwise the Update appears conflicting. Willy

Willy, My understanding is that Williams started from scratch, using primary source material. He does reference a letter from the daughter and a conversation with Ken Hammer as a source for Cooper's death, but I cannot find anything on Ancestry to support your statement. I would appreciate it if you would send a link to the census. If you also belong to Fold3, it has his enlistment at www.fold3.com/image/310876420/?terms=John%20Cooper, listing Ireland as his place of birth. Diane

Diane Re John Cooper --- my computerese insufficient to post material from other sites. Ancestry.com, Search, All Collections, has the John Robert Cooper info (born Wisc. 1854). Includes daughter Flossie. Federal census has more. Find A Grave has photo (recent ?) of flat headstone for John Robert Cooper 7th "Calvary".
John Cooper, Co. E, 1st US Cav., age 33, is on 1880 census Fort Lapwai Ida. Terr. (born Ireland, parents born Ireland).

Diane,
Point is --- John Cooper (7th Cav., and 1st Cav.), and John Robert Cooper appear to be two different people.

According to Williams, John Cooper -- born in Ireland -- was discharged from the 7th in September 1878 and reenlisted about two months later in the 1st Cavalry where he served for five years as a cook and tailor. Same guy.
