It has always seemed to me that there are many parallels between the British experience in the American Revolution and the American experience in Vietnam. They both were fighting a war that was highly unpopular at home, were superior to their enemies in almost every regard, won all of the battles (well, the British did lose a few), controlled the cities, etc., but lost in the end due to lack of clear objectives/strategy and underestimation of the will and capabilities of their opponents.
