I am curious if the members of this board also collect ACW and/Indian Wars artifacts, photos and books? If so, what and what do you consider your prized piece?

I have a tomahawk that I bought for $400. I am unsure of it. It is brass with the pipe, the heart cut out and a steel insert for the blade. The beaded handle I believe is a modern replacement but the work is good and the wood appears to be walnut. Looks a bit like Lowdogs photo. I have a stone headed war club or coup stick on a very spindly stick with raw hide tied with sinew around the groove in the stone and over the stick. I think it's the real deal cause I only paid a few dollars at a flea market and no one seemed to know what it was. I have a few calvary buttons. I have two discharge papers from a Sargeant in company D of the 22 or 20th infantry who came up with the mail on the 26th or 27th and his letters and a note. My family recently got copies of a letter from Fort Abraham Lincoln (?) about a relative of ours killed before before Custer in the Dakota's. Got a couple of arrows but I believe they are reproductions. That's the whole of it besides a few dozen books. I have government documents 1877 with MaGuires 2cnd (?) Map and his report. I have the 1849 government documents on every attempt to solve the Indian problem and an analysis of the results. Everything was tried, everything. The cruelty of the Indian schools, separation of children from their families, to break the selfdestructive cycle of the Indian war culture used at the end of the 1800's did in part work but nothing tried before did. In 1849 they identified that all the converted Indians that tried to farm were unable to get wives as these farmers didn't have any status without counting coup, scalping and killing others and stealing horses. The warrior classes would eventually murder the Indian farmers. The do gooders tried every concievable solution even back that long ago.

I have a pretty, what I call intermediate level, collection of both CW and IW uniforms and equipment. I have been collecting this junk since I was a kid so was able to amass a pretty good lot of it back when it was easier to find. Indian Wars Cavalry was the first reenacting I did and back then there were no reproductions so we all used original things or made some of the stuff ourselves. I wish I had kept more of those original things from then, but at least I kept a lot of it.

I have attended one of their auctions--even bought something. They are fabulously 'high-end', not for the faint at heart or most mortal working folks. Their catalogues are pretty amazing to look through though--sort of collector's items in themselves.

I have long enjoyed the pleasure of thumbing through high end auction catalogues and dreaming about how I would spend the multi millions I won in the lottery.

Dave, Speaking of "Do You Collect", I suspect I can get Beth, QC, and others to kick in for getting you mounted and riding. I put in a call to Budweiser for a horse since you are a beer drinker. They are considering my proposal to use you in one of the 50th Super Bowl Commercials, they also feel they can work in the spotted dog(Dalmatian)! Don't worry about PETA. We will also see if we can get Chris involved with a weed whacker, in case you need a landing spot.
Let you know when I hear back.
Regards, Tom

The above was from our first ride with the Real Birds. I am on Kinnard Real Bird's horse named Roger. That paint next to me is a real stout horse. Tori Harper is on the far right. Regards Steve
