I went back to Gov. Documents and the area (nearby forts say 4 inches of rain in May, 2 inches in June 1876). And consulting with my cousin who lives 100 miles away. It would not likely to be dusty or support a grass fire. Cheat Grass which came from Europe he call's greassy grass and is now the dominante grass in many places now and it burns easier than our original prairie mix. Hi magpie, are those documents you found publicly available online? I'd be interested in checking them out. Cheers, conrad

I'm not sure but I will get the title of the volume I own. It's Gov. documents. It's in a section of reports from the various Forts where they list thing's about resources, forestry and weather at each. Fort. When I see these I buy them, usually $10, as they are packed with information and despite all the joy's of on line and computer's I find I can pick up a book and flip several hundred pages and find things faster.

Thanks magpie.
Understood that it's easier to go through a paper version, but living overseas means that the online stuff is easier to access. A volume name sometimes can give me a lead for finding a version in a repository, Hathi, or Google Books.
Cheers,

Cheers, conrad OK: Department of Agriculture report 1878, forestry pages 515-550. reporting style is different for each fort so you really get stuck reading all of it. Beth is correct in that you can't always extrapulate regional paterns for localm, that said it's a lot more accurate than pulling it out __________. I have also ; report of the secretary of war volume 2 part 3 1876. Stanton with Crook on the rosebud reporting rain june 11 and june 1 further south. Macquire reported dust in mens throats, noses and ears but they were on the road with Terry and Gibbon's command with wagons etc.
