Tom,
Thanks for this.
I'm pretty sure that the photo is from "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" by the way.

It is Shaw, and it was the very moment in the movie when gunfire is heard from Corporal Quain's (Tom Tyler) Paradise River patrol as they are attempting to escape from their pursuit.

Good memory...!!!!! Loved the Cavalry Trilogy. It is Shaw, and it was the very moment in the movie when gunfire is heard from Corporal Quain's (Tom Tyler) Paradise River patrol as they are attempting to escape from their pursuit.

I also remember Lucille Santini, the love of my life in 8th Grade, but by the time Lucille came along I had seen that movie, and the other two at least ten times a piece. I would include Sergeant Rutledge in with the other three although it came ten years later than Rio Grande.
If you have never visited Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon where all four of those movies were made you have missed a treat for the eyes.
Birnam Wood is about to come to Dunsinaine (no such thing as too much camouflage) at the Met, I have a Typhoon and an Akula on the workbench so I MAST attend to some business.

Brittles (John Wayne)-Pennell(Harry Carey Jr.)-Tyree (Ben Johnson)-Cohill(John Agar)-Alshard (George O'Brian)
That building still stands, and was there long before the movie was made. You can look through the windows and it is still furnished as Captain Brittles' quarters complete with the 1876 calendar still on the wall.
It you recall the opening scenes of Fort Apache, the stage pulls up to a stage coach relay station, a two story building. That also stands. It is Goulden's Trading Post, the original building on the site. On the second floor they have a museum dedicated to all the movies made in Monument Valley. Most were directed by Ford, but there are a few others as well. There is a motel which is not bad for a place in the middle of nowhere. The food at the restaurant is only a notch above the death burger palace at LBH. They offer a tour of all the locations where the scenes like the one that started this thread were shot.

Montrose, that style of riding is called “Roman Style” and Ben Johnson, Harry Carey, Jr, and Claude Jarman, Jr, had no stunt doubles, it was them actually riding the horses.

Wayne was fond of trilogies; John Ford Cavalry Trilogy: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Fort Apache Rio Grande The Howard Hawks Western Trilogy: Rio Lobo Rio Bravo El Dorado Ian. I do own the John Ford trilogy on DVD but I can only claim to have seen the other three. On the studio shot of the 5 actors. How acturate are those uniforms. I noticed the various in the size of the strips and know I read somewhere that the size varied by rank. What about color? Beth
