Custer left Ft. AL with 2 companies of 17th Infantry, 1 company of 6th Infantry, 34 men of 20tth infantry( 1 platoon of Gatling Guns). Gibbon's Montana Column, included 7th infantry and a portion of the 2nd Cavalry, and these guys suffered immensely, weather wise long before hooking up with the Dakota Column. How did all of these troops fare in the remainder of the Campaign of 1876 and through spring of 1877? How were they used? What impact did they have on the outcome of the campaign?

Tom: This is out of the necessity brought upon me by ignorance but On The Border With Crook will be helpful. Yellowstone Campaign (I think) by Greene follows the 5th Infantry post LBH until the LBH Campaign termination. The novels of Terry C. Johnson in the Plainsman series, historical ficton, but they lead you through most of this.

Thanks Chuck, I know they don't vanish and probably remain with Terry, in the field for a period. I'll look in to the above resource.
