I've used Image Shack for posting pic's here but they've moved away from free hosting to a monthly subscription. Though it's cheap, free is better. So if anyone can suggest a free web host for picture posting I'd appreciate it. And, if technology has moved beyond the need for this and there's now a painless way to post pic's here directly with out a third-party host well that'd be even better.
Thanks in advance.

..both Flickr and Photobucket have free account facilities but you will be bombarded with advertisements, however they are useful if you can put up with that.... I used to use Photobucket but closed my account some time ago... alternatively, you can upload direct to this forum from your 'pictures' library on your p.c. first of all you have to re-size any photo to under 1MB.... to upload directly, when replying to a post, click on the 'add attachment' top right hand corner of this reply box then click on 'add files' which will take you to your 'pictures' library... you should already have re-sized your photo and then click on 'open' and it will upload to here.. this is one I made earlier.. ..if this isn't clear, then I suggest opening one or other of the free accounts mentioned above... I should add that, this image of mine is quite small, I think you can make them much larger than this... I downsized it quite a lot...

let's have a look at this one, it should be a bit bigger.... I reduced it to just under 1 MB hmmm.... still not very big... perhaps that is the limit here now... I did think at one time, perhaps before the board changes... that you could get them much larger.... well, that's the best I can do.... best of luck...

...hope you're still with me Mike... sorry if I'm boring you but I'm finding out here myself with this.... here is one from my Picasa Web Album... if you've not heard of this, it's a free one via a Google account... I have inserted the image from my 'drop box' in this account... let's have a look, it should be a lot bigger...

...here's one for Fred, and others perhaps.... I do hope it doesn't bring back too many bad memories.... or is painful in any way... if so, I shall delete it, of course...with my apologies...

...here's one for Fred, and others perhaps.... I do hope it doesn't bring back too many bad memories.... or is painful in any way... Looks to me to be the Mekong delta. I ran convoys in that vicinity. Dangerous, dangerous area a bit upstream. No unpleasant memories for me, Margaret; no pain here. Only excitement... the excitement of youth and what we could accomplish. An absolutely beautiful picture. Can you e-mail it to me; if it is the Mekong, I would like to keep it. Very best wishes, Fred.

Thanks, Margaret and Fred.
In a test I was able to attach a photo from my PC directly but only of the size of yours, Margaret. I wish I could figure out how to resize.
Fred, thanks for the tip on Photobucket.

Mike,
I think you get the small image like the one "alfakilo" posted on the Fetterman site when you put it on your post as an attachment. The boards can only accommodate an image under 1 MB. If you put your photo on "photobucket," then copy the URL-- or whatever one of those choices they give you works!!!!-- then the image you see on the boards shows up as "full screen."
Is that what you are talking about?
Best wishes, Fred.

Fred,
Yep, that's what i was talking about. I was able to post a picture the size of Alfakilo's in a test post. It was about 3/4 of a MB. I'm still wondering if there's a way to increase the size by giving up on the resolution and still holding to under a MB?

Fred, thanks for the tip on Photobucket. hi Mike.. I've just noticed you put up some fabulous photos of the Fetterman site on that thread, I suppose they came via Image Shack... I don't think this resizing them to under 1MB is much use really as the images are still so small.... so like Fred I would recommend Photobucket, or download Picasa... there are also these new 'Cloud' type programmes.... with the latest Windows 8.1 there is Microsoft 'Sky Drive'... I have a newish Acer laptop and that comes with Acer 'Cloud'.... I think both these do much the same as Photobucket and Picasa.... hope you get something sorted and look forward to seeing some more from you....

I think the flight had just left Ho Chi Minh City.... Margaret, It is a gorgeous shot!! I am trying to gather as many photos of places I was stationed in-- Germany, Vietnam, Virginia, Georgia, etc. I lost so many of these and have recently managed to make contact with old friends. It was so weird: on Christmas day, two old officers I served with-- one, in Germany; the second, an officer who worked for me-- I had seen, spoke to, or heard from in 50 and 45 years, both e-mailed me. We have exchanged some photos, so my little collection has gained some. Your Mekong delta picture would be a great addition. If you check your messages, I have sent you my e-mail address. I would be forever grateful. Best wishes, Fred.

I'm still wondering if there's a way to increase the size by giving up on the resolution and still holding to under a MB? Mike, I think the size is irrelevant. When you use a picture as an attachment to a post, the size-- as in "alfakilo's" post-- will always be that big. In order to enlarge "alfa's" picture, you need to log in, then click on his attachment/picture. Otherwise, the only way to include a photo-- at least that I know of-- is by using something like photobucket. The only thing confusing to me-- and only because I am so damn technically challenged-- is the choice of four different "URLs," or whatever they are called. So I overcome that by copying all four on a Word doc, then try each one until the photo pops up. It may also be called the "onset of senility," I'm not sure. Best wishes, Fred.

Fred,
I like your method - easy to follow, produces results. Memory is a greatly over rated faculty since it is limited to what actually occurred, was said, etc. If we were constrained by memory politics would be impossible and this board would be pretty much content free.
As evidence, I visited Photobucket on your advice where I learned they already know me. Wonder where else I have accounts no longer in my memory?
