It was pretty exciting. I'm glad Champ Bailey gets at least one SuperBowl. He was as good at his position as Peyton is at his, and his work ethic is right up there. He's late 30's and still running with the rabbits, as impressive as Manning being able to move and risk all after four neck surgeries involving the spinal column. Really impressed with.....Elway, as his picks in draft and free agency have literally all panned out, including the guys 'too old' or too low in the draft nobody else wanted, like Knighton, and he kept Moreno, who had been a wash for three seasons, and Ball, who fumbled too much, and a basketball player named Thomas who has become a tight end. Five players with more than 10 passing touchdowns plus a running game. What's been greatest has been the team has gotten better and is peaking now. Five defensive starters lost and it's better than ever. If Miller were able, it would literally be a scary team. I don't think Seattle has much of a chance, nor will it be close. If it holds together for next year, it could be undefeated. Nobody else is looking as good. D.C., I hope the above prediction from the Beneficent, Bombastic, Bard of Boulder comes true. However, as Benteen says the wind will be an issue and the game should be close. As for the Seahawks secondary, while maybe one of the best of the last 20 years, they won't be able to lock down all the weapons Denver has. Peyton should be judicious with his outs, work the middle, slants and digs. That could loosen deep balls later. Anyway good luck to all Bronco fans. I hope to toast two of the top 5 QB's of all time at the end(Elway and Manning).
Regards, Tom
Tom...any retrospective thoughts?

I hope John Unitas is in that group.

Yes, Unitas, I saw him take over for a guy Named George Shaw, a long time ago. Unitas, among others would have a ball with new rules. The five in no particular order: Unitas, Montana, Elway, Peyton Manning, and Tarkington. I'm sure some disagreement with #5. Next 5: Brady, Rodger the Dodger, Fouts, J. Kelly, & Marino. Again, with changed rules and different team no telling where Namath and Jurgensen would end, up numbers wise.

I don't usually get into football discussions, but I hope no one forgets Bart Starr. Billy Kilmer might not have been among the best talent that every played the position, but he was the absolute best on the field leader I have ever seen.
No one mentioned Y.A. Tittle either. That was a surprise.

Kilmer was the back up to Tittle's replacement in SF at one point before he went to the Skins. He was cerebral, and had guts made up for a lot! He also made a stop in N.O., could have been the reason for bags over fans heads!

Unitas's first pass was a 'pick-six' by J.C. Caroline of the Bears - auspicious start. Guys like Unitas, Starr, Tittle, et.al. called their own plays- all of them. Jurgensen also. I've never quite seen a football act so UNaerodynamically as those thrown by Billy Kilmer; 'wounded ducks' would be complimentary. But the guy had the heart of a lion. Remember, it was back in the day when a QB was just another football player and if you broke his jaw, nose, ribs or other body parts, no big deal. Ahh, the good ol' days. I'm starting to sound like my father. Next thing I'll be looking for the ol' leather helmets and Single Wing formations.

Well, it didn't. Denver got hosed and by a better team. When it came down to it they were missing too many starters and I and others had thought that Manning's organization allowed such replacements in the wheelhouse. The center was a tackle till this year because we lost the first two ahead of him. Plus the all pro left tackle, right tackle, and six defensive starters to injury. Clady and Miller alone are huge gaps to fill.
Of course, I'm a fair weather fan and this has zero emotional pull on me. I'm sure they'll do better in the Series next year. Batter up!
Freshen this. Out of peanuts?

Well seeing that this is a football thread, I just want to ask you guys a question;
Because England has spread it sporting wings right around the globe (Cricket, Soccer, and Rugby), we now have nations competing we each other at national level, it sort of like a custom over here and in other places, to try and pick your best team to represent your country at the sport you follow, and when the selectors pick there squads it starts off various debates in all the pubs and clubs to who was in and who was left out.
So the question I wanted to ask was, if American Football was played on a national stage (similar to the Soccer World Cup) who would be your best team to represent the USA?
Ian.

I would love for the answer to be the Washington Redskins minus Daniel Snyder. The real answer though is the team where the whole is several echelons better than the sum of its parts., and that varies on any given Sunday.

QC: Well while we are at, when I gave you a bit of a hard time about Kilmer, I should have added my admiration for Pat Fisher(not QB, but DB)probably the biggest over achiever and lb for lb the toughest SOB I ever saw at the position.
Ian: among other things I would like to see the NFL do is have a skills competition at the All-Star Game. And a Rugby match when in England as a prelim for one of their football games. They could field a team from the practice squads, I think it would be great fun. I plated both Rugby and American football as a kid.

Hi Chuck, I don’t think the US has an equivalent to our system, with Cricket, Soccer, and Rugby, it’s like a journey that starts with you playing for your home Town club, then getting picked for your County side and finally reaching your goal and playing for the national side, if you do play for England you win a cap, these caps are very special and receiving one places you on a different level and if you succeed at international level you are made, plus the honour of Captaining your country is highly prized and again if you are a success you usually end up being honoured by the Queen and having letters after your name, the very best end up being Knighted.

Hi Tom, glad you pulled on a jumper, you cannot be a top sports man till you have played the game at international level, playing against the best in your country is great but playing against the best in the world is greater, why don’t every state have a state team, and these could be made up of all the top players in that state, then play inter state tournaments, that way you could test the best players against each other and one day you could have a national team, the only trouble though is that not many countries play Americas brand of Football.

Tom: Yes Pat Fischer was as good as they come. I saw him play several times at RFK, and one particular hit he wade on Walt Garrison of the Cowboys drove that man back and out of bounds at least ten yards. Never saw such a devastating hit tackle in my life. Last I heard he was raising horses up around Middleburg or Purcellville somewhere.

Ian, just a quick note - not only rugby, 'soccer' and cricket but the world's first lacrosse CLUB was founded in ye olde England - Heaton Mersey. Loved sitting there along the pitch enjoying a pint!
