Hi! I have posted over at the other lbha board and I decided to join this board as well. I recognize some of the user names from the other board so I'm sure some of you will recognize me. I am a Mom of 3 small girls but in a lot of my spare time I love to read history and watch history shows. It started in the 5th grade when I read my U.S. history text book from cover to cover in two days. I was studying Billy the kid for a while in 2012 then I somehow moved on to the Civil war. I was watching a documentary part on Custer's charge at Gettysburg and I thought to myself how he seemed to be a capable General but all I had heard of him in all my schooling was that he fought at the little bighorn and was massacred to the last man. Shamefully I do not even remember them mentioning the survivors, Reno or Benteen. I had been taught Custer was arrogant and foolish.(which I know now is not so) So I started reading about the battle and have since been unable to stop. I hope I can add something to the discussion here and of course learn something myself. Lisa

Lisa,
I am delighted to see you here. Your questions, your ideas, and your thoughts on the other board have shown you to be an extremely valuable asset, no matter where you post. I would hope you stay here-- and active-- but I would also hope you remain active over there.
You will find this board to be extremely diverse in topics and you will learn an awful lot. Please be active in asking questions about the LBH and in starting new threads. Regardless of how many times things have been hashed, re-hashed, and re-hashed over again, we are all still interested.
Like the other board, we have our local idiot-- you will discover "wild" soon enough, the same moron on both boards; personally, I ignore him completely. He is the type quite easily ignored. Others, however, make up for him and you will find people here who also post on the other board. "AZ Ranger" here = "benteeneast" there. You will learn this soon enough. You have my e-mail; contact me any time you wish. It is and will be, my pleasure.
You also have some marvelous personalities here. Dark Cloud ("DC") is our resident genius... no hyperbole, no exaggeration. He is cantankerous as hell, and just as hilarious. Quincannon ("QC") has forgotten more about the military than I ever knew... or hope to know. "Montrose" is a world-class American hero... and I use that term sparingly. Ian-- from England-- is one of the most refreshing breaths of fresh air you will ever hope to meet on any board, any chat-room. "BC"-- aka, Britt-- is on both boards and is more fun than one can imagine... witty, smart, experienced....
And I will up-date the list as my mind clears from this morning's mind-boggling exertions.
My friend "benteen" is on both boards: one of the nicest people I have ever met. And we even have our resident Australian, and extremely nice fellow named "mac." Knows his stuff, too.
Lisa... welcome! It is our pleasure and privilege to see you here.
Best wishes, Fred.

Lisa: Let me add my welcome as well. I am an old man, but not as old as Fred who is older than dirt. That said my on again off again ticker has had two severe shocks today. The first is seeing a picture of my sixteen year old grand daughter taken yesterday on her birthday, and the second the absolute beauty of the woman depicted in your avatar. Please give me some data on that.
We will I suspect frequently disagree on Custer's arrogance and foolishness. I much prefer to measure military folk by wisdom, and professionalism, and I think managed risk taking can be sometimes mistaken, for arrogance and foolishness, and the final label that is applied, should been seen in light of the full context of the situation. Foolish risk taking is always just what it is arrogant and foolish. Sometimes only an in depth look can determine the difference and that is what we are about here. I would not wish to have a beer with the man. I would love to play him in poker because my bank account can always use a lift. My personal rating of him was that when he was good he was only mediocre, and when he was bad, be sure to be watching a baseball game and not be serving under him.

Thanks Fred for the warm welcome. I hope to post here a lot too. Thanks Quin for the welcome! I know what you mean about the shock of your granddaughter turning 16. My oldest is 5 and is going to school next week. I am still in shock how this happened as she was just a little baby in these cute strawberry pants not too long ago!We may disagree or agree, at least on some points. I always try to read with an open mind. I tend to think he chose to attack a day early because of the reports from his scouts that he had been discovered and the fact that they lost a pack mule and when the men went back for it they found Indians eating the hardtack. The beautiful women is as artist named Saki Michan's rendition of Pocahontas from the Disney movie. I think all of her artwork is beautiful. I found it one day when I googling princesses with my daughters. Lisa

I keep having this repeating dream every so often since I started reading about the battle. I am riding up front with Custer! We all know how well that turns out.

Lisa: Custer used his judgment which is what he was paid to do. Turns out there was no need, but he did not know that at the time. From the time he crossed the divide though, things that should have clarified themselves in his mind seemed to be overlooked and instead of mounting a deliberate attack, he mounted one driven by haste more than anything else. The one thing he maintained though was surprise, and that element could both have been maintained and served him well during the rest of that afternoon. It did not, and there is no one to point the finger at other than the commander.
Thank you for the information on the artist. I will look her up. There is another one whose name escapes me at the moment that you often see in art and print stores out here that does very similar work.
Don't eat popcorn before you go to bed. It will make you dream of Custer every time.

Lisa, Sorry I am a little late. I join with the others in wishing you a warm welcome to our forum. Look forward to exchanging ideas and thoughts with you. I couldn't post yesterday as My wife was cutting the lawn, trimming the hedge and putting down the Scotts Turf builder. If I don't watch her like a hawk she will take short cuts Be Well Dan

Dan, I will try with our electric mower and see, she is great at weeding the borders and that is a job I hate.
We are both pretty hands on around the place, but it is always me that gets injured, as she has said on many occasion, ‘’Ian you don’t take enough care’’ ouch.
