After giving it some thought, and knowing that I will be spending at least the next few summers (possibly Winters) in this area, I was wondering at the thoughts of starting a Living History unit dedicated to the Indian Wars.
Given the limited vendors, it would be quite possible to Focus on the earlier part of the Indian wars, primarily the 1866-1868 time period. We could focus on living history displays but also go out in the field and take part in marches, bivouacking, and maybe some live fire training as well. I find when talking to the public it is better to explain to them what its like when you have, "walked a mile in their shoes".
The standards for what I have in mind would be pretty high, and authenticity is the key.
Just going to see if anyone else out there shared this idea. I suppose we would draw on people from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, North and South Dakota, and Colorado...unless people are willing to drive over 10 hours for events out west...I am a new comer from North Carolina and I am struck at the fact there are not many units.
If there is already something like this in place, I would MUCH rather join it than try and create my own, and even if I did I would step down as the leader soon, considering my job requires me to be flexible in my location.
I hope this does not step on any toes, and people are interested!

Hello, I don't know exactly where you are now, but if you happened to go to the Little Bighorn reenactment last week I'm sure you saw representatives from several units participating and hopfully found some that fit into what you want to do. There are some activites out there that are attended by established units. A good one that comes to mind is the 'Buffulo Days' one--fairly 'hard core'. I assume you used to do Civil War reenactment if you are from NC (so am I) and if you happened to do Union/Federal you already have most everything you need to do early Indian Wars. There are several dealers linked from this site that carry later IW stuff if you are looking to 'later date' your stuff. The Morrow photos are the best source for seeing what the 1876 'look' was--pretty mixed I'd say. Good luck.
