Was wondering if any of you have any more details about Custer's sword he used during the Civil War? I do believe he took it from a Confederate. It is the one that has that "cool" latin phrase etched in it. Just wondering dimensions, weight, manufacturer, etc.
Thanks,
Jim

The thread referenced in a previous post contains several errors. The blade of the sword is pre-1800 as I am unaware of any European sword made with 3 fullers in the 1800's. It is a heavy cavalry blade apparently remounted with a CSA made guard. It is heavy cavalry because it is straight, they used them sort of like lances. Light cavalry used curved blades. The French model 1822 changed the straight blade to a curved blade for heavy cavalry. The US model 1840 is a copy of the French Model 1822. Now the sword Custer captured from the Confederate officer shown above is very similar to one used by Wade Hampton although his was even more massive. That sword is in the museum of the Confederacy and I have a picture of it photographed for me by the curator if you are ever interested. The Custer sword was housed in the Smithsonian but was lent to the LBH museum for perpetual display.
