I believe that in addition to the previous mentioned problems with Indian accounts, translation, writers with an agenda, etc. In my reading of the battle and warrior accounts of it, two other factors are pointed out worth mentioning,
1- A warrior saw things only as was his part in the fight, If he happened to be were there was some soldier resistance than all the soldiers were brave, if at a part where the soldiers broke and ran, than all the soldiers were cowards.
2- The time when the statements were made. When the warriors found out that they had killed a great war chief they were afraid we would hang them. So you had a 1000 warriors saying yes I was at the LBH but I had the flu and was sipping chicken soup in my tepee. However years later when as another poster said they became celebrities, now that same warrior says that he was in hand to hand combat, with a dozen actually claiming is was him who killed Custer

Dan:
1) Foxhole eye view.
2) How else does a self respecting warrior get on the cover of People Magazine? Certainly he does not do it by sipping chicken soup. This type of stuff is not confined to warriors of 1876. It is the human condition regardless of race, color, or creed. Just think of all the wantabe's and jackasses that come out of the woodwork for every crisis-du-jour.

I read you loud and clear 2- Well said I agree 100% and should have added that to my post. Too damn lazy. I appreciate you jumping in and saying it for me. There was no intent on my part to belittle them in any way Be Well Dan

Playing devils advocate---- Unless we can place at least 500+ warriors in the vicinity of MTCF in and around the time of Custer's arrival there we must conclude that Custer fought a tactical battle of sorts along battle ridge.

Dan: Never though otherwise.
Richard: You have to have Custer at MTCF to justify dawdling. No Custer at MTCF or at least no Custer in force there and all the fine models crumble into dust, and it is back to a buffalo hunt, and two battalion commanders are off the hook.

I agree! Makes you wonder why they keep ignoring Godfrey. He told everyone just days after the battle.Godfrey was sent to find the route Custer took to the Battle field and did. They even had him draw the line on the map at the RCOI. It is there, all anyone needs to do is look....... But they keep trying to shove Custer into MTC. Old Myths die hard I guess.
Its funny how years later they start finding fired shells exactly on the route that Godfrey has told about..... and they still don't get it.

Black Nimbus, you are a Bully, a Big Head and a Bore, I have more important things going on in my life at the moment then having to reply to a Barnpot like you.

Apparently not, yantaylor, because here you are replying when you allegedly don't have the time.
Godfrey did not find surety on the question of Custer's route. He found evidence of shod horses moving along that route east of Sharpshooter to MTC after which all was confusing. Sharpshooter isn't on the map at the RCOI. So these sweeping assurances it was figured out are not true.
In general, people are using MTC and MTCF as the same thing. Custer, of course, HAD to putter along in MTC at some point. Whether he got close to the LBH is the issue, not that he wasn't there.

Battle Ridge is sandwiched between two feachers/depressions which if used as axis of attack simultaniouly ,deliver a double outflanking whammy to defending forces on the ridge. Just suggesting a possible jigsaw piece.
Ian old bean it's a rite of passage being "savaged" by Cloudy Dick.Every newbie gets the same treatment.Enjoy.

Rosebud: You and I happen to agree on the route. It is the one that makes the most tactical sense. Moving down MTC offers some concealment but it is a deathtrap to anyone unfortunate enough to be caught there.
Ian: What the hell is a barnpot.
DC: I believe your version of events is predicated on Custer being wounded at MTCF, thus being the root cause for tactical disintegration. Did you ever consider that he just got snookered and in fact the leadership of that battalion of the 7th Cavalry, in fact the battalion itself was not that good. When not that good, meets an overwhelming number of very pissed off hostiles bad things happen, and they did.
Black Nimbus - Cloudy Dick. You know you got to love this place.

OH Dark Cloud: Clair ( the Hussar) taught you well on the other board......That was vintage Clair.....well done. Keep up the well placed barbs. You are still not Clair's equal, but keep TRYING.
It's OK for you to fail, but don't give up. You can pass Clair, I know you can.
Yantaylor: People like the KY Hussar and Dark Cloud need to vent. Play with them and make them feel wanted. After all, they need friends too.

Ah, I see it is Richard's nativity day. I knew I was saving that tiny bit left in my bottle of Bushmill's for some good reason. I shall drink it to your continued good health sir.
