Best wishes, Fred.

Afternoon all...as the new Editor for the Greasy Grass just wanted to announce the 28th issue, May 2012, is at the printers for distribution next month. Gordon Richard, Kevin Galvin, Rod Beemer, Tim Bradshaw, and Robert Doyle are featured.
Couple of other quick comments: I have all 28 issues and if there is something someone needs scanned let me know. One of these days I'm going to scan all the covers and have them posted on the CBHMA website. Wonderful art.
Fred, Upton did Dustin's book that way as it is how the original was done - privately printed and mimeographed! (remember that smell?)
I am always looking for interesting and informative articles for the GG. I will have an "Author's Guide" on the website in a week or so but if you want a copy sooner email me (roddotthomasatsusneydotcom). We have a set production timeline so all articles for consideration for the 2013 issue (I'm already working on it) should be in to me by 1 October. And no...you don't have to be a member of the CBHMA - just an interesting, insightful author.
I am downsizing so at the moment I have a few things to offer for sale. Email me if interested. Books, backcopies, print, etc.
My copy of Glen's wonderful book was signed and inscribed by him in his studio outside LA. I was able to spend a day with him there and saw the stuff in the book in the real. Amazing collection.
Hey, I will be speaking at the Denver Plains Indian War Symposium (sponsored by the Order of the Indian Wars) on 21 April. Also speaking are Greg Michno, James Donovan, Jeff Barnes, and Mark Van Der Logt. Come on down!
Regards, Rod...

Fred, Upton did Dustin's book that way as it is how the original was done - privately printed and mimeographed! (remember that smell?) Rod, Yes, I figured that. Kind of disconcerting, but I guess that is the best and least expensive way of re-producing something. It works. Some time ago, someone sent me the index for all the articles in Greasy Grass. I may ask you for specific articles if that wouldn't be too much. Best wishes, Fred.

I really need to get with the program and start getting Greasy Grass. It's criminal that in nearly 10 years of active postings on various boards (and 2/3s of my life spent reading about this battle), that I don't belong to any organization and I don't receive any of the newsletters/periodicals.

Greetings all...hope all is well. Fred, let me know what specifically you wish. By the way, the index for Greasy Grass is on the web - www.custerbattlefield.org - for those interested. I can also send a copy to anyone wishing a copy. For "El Crab" and all...the Greasy Grass (issue 28 out next month!, the CBHMA Annual Symposium Papers, and the Research Review, are collectively a rather amazing body of thought and conjecture, not to mention some really fine history by some really fine historians. Copyright gets in the way of reprinting the issues in toto and so some, like the LBHA, are reprinting individual articles from authors STILL ALIVE and can give permission. Until a solution is found to the copyright laws then that's the best that can be done "en masse." I know, I tried to get both CBHMA pubs reproduced when on the Board to no avail. SOOOO...copies are it for now of some really insightful and thoughtful approaches to this history. I'm about to send out three articles for the 2013 issue of Greasy Grass to the Review Board for their evaluations. Isn't it time YOU sat down and wrote something for a publication that goes to 1,600 members worldwide and several libraries and museums? All submissions must be to me NLT 1 October. Now...go look for the ink! Hope all is well and please have a great day! Regards, Rod Thomas Editor, Greasy Grass

You know... I have no idea. I would guess there was no difference between tribes. Maybe Rod Thomas does.
Best wishes, Fred.

Face paint and personal battle accoutrement: Warrior personal preference for recognizing personal "spiritual" helpers for combat prowess. No tribe "specific" color as such. Successful returning war parties usually painted faces black as sign of victory and even wives wore this color in recognition of victory. Some patterns were recognized by others as an indication of a certain tribe. The Crow people were widely known for painting their foreheads red and when coupled with their distinctive hair styles left no doubt as to who they were. But so did the Arikaras, Hidatsas, and Mandans. So, no specific color...
Facial designs were tied specifically to power. The typical Hollywood three stripes across the checks are just that - "Hollywood" stuff. Hope this helps. You may wish to check out several references from the National Museum of the American Indian for more details.
As for the Lakota song on the video suggest contact the Tribal Headquarters directly for a translation. That would be the best...
Regards, Rod Thomas...
