BrokenSword, Sad to say, but we lost 'The Wilderness' years ago. I first visited the battlefield with my father in 1978. We spent 4 days visiting all the battlefields in Virginia. In 1998 I returned and was shocked to see how much development had occurred at The Wilderness. There is a park road running from Ewell's position near Saunders Field to the Tapp farm where A.P. Hill was positioned. All along this road are(were) trenches, and now million dollar homes dot the landscape. I asked a Park Ranger why all the new homes, and he stated that "Fredericksburg area was considered a bedroom community of Washington D.C." Of all the battlefields that I first visited 30 years ago,I found The Wilderness the most changed!
