Does anyone know where Bradley is buried? I tried to look it up today, but found nothing -- not even in Find A Grave.

I don't know either, clw, but he was an Ohioan; my guess would be that his body was returned there for burial. Speaking of; this weekend (9-10 Aug) marks the 131st anniversary of the Battle of Big Hole, where Bradley was killed in action.

Thanks, Steve. That's what triggered me to look for his grave. That and an upcoming trip to Montana. I considered Ohio too and also Atlanta where his wife and family resided.

There is a footnote in The Battle of the Big Hole by Aubrey Haines that mentions there is a monument for Bradley in a cemetery at Stryker, Ohio. It is doubted that he is actually buried there. P.W. Norris, Superintendent of Yellowstone, went to recover the remains and found they had been dragged from the shallow grave by animals. The book is previewed via Google at the link below. The pages that reference the above information are 108-109. tinyurl.com/5femgu

T-Dude,
Norris went where to recover the remains? I assume Bradley was buried on the battle site?

Yeah, he was buried on the battle site. When Norris went to recover his remains, he was unable to find them. According to the book, all he could find to return to the father was a "mouldering plate and headboard, carved on the field of gore".

Yes, Steve. He went to the battlefield, found the handmade marker and returned it to the family. The remains had succumbed to the elements and scavengers. So Bradley is at the battlefield.
T-Dude, with dialup it's almost impossible to check all those Google book references. Thanks so much for the legwork.

Seems desperately sad, for Bradley of all people. But I suppose all frontier officers must have imagined that fate for themselves ... Awful.

What was it Gibbon said - something about being killed by an Indian shooting from behind a rock, and having your name misspelled in the newspapers?!?!?

Is this the same Norris that was at the LBH in 1877 looking for Charlie Reynolds grave?
