Does the name Ben Nighthorse Campbell ring a bell? He was credited with pushing the name change through Congress. Excellent post, Melani, but don't be too hard on DC. This photo TreasureDude found from the Joe Medicine Crow Award Ceremoney illustrates a lot of what DC says.

They look like they probably have a few wing dings hidden away in their ammo pouches with their main supply back in the passenger seat of their RV.

Keogh, I'd love to hear the specific reasoning against changing the name of the battlefield, because it seriously seems to me a no brainer. We're all Americans now and the battlefield has a neutral name that reflects that.
I think reenactors are kinda cute, but it looks like far too much work for me to call it fun.

Excellent post, Melani, but don't be too hard on DC. This photo TreasureDude found from the Joe Medicine Crow Award Ceremoney illustrates a lot of what DC says. I am personally tired of continually being insulted when nobody has brought up the topic except dc for the purpose of hurling insults. He doesn't have to like my hobbies and he doesn't have to participate in them. But if I started, say, gratuitously trashing his website at every opportunity, whether it was relevant or not, I have a feeling I might hear about it.

And did anyone see the red pickup truck in the lower left corner?

This is a board about the LBH where conflict exists over accurate history and its presentation. So long as re-enactors continue to inflate their contested role (now they're "Living Historians") then it's fair game. They're playing dress up and socializing no differently than the people who like to dress up as stuffed animals or dolls like to congregate together, only at public parks rather than Vegas conventions. Custer provides the cover story, is all. Ambulatory Action Figures or Furries, it's pretty much the same. In conjunction with hidden identities on these forums, sometimes multiple, it's rather of a piece.
Your specific presence or participation in re-enactments doesn't interest me at all. I offer my opinion and you can accept it or not, ignore it or not, but it's inappropriate to suppress comment very much related to the board's topics, something my sleazy website is not.
Enduring Yours, Frabbie-Darling,
Bonehead
(in loving memory of whatever Indian may have once had that name, or something like it, whom I honor, damn it, HONOR by associating myself with him. He'd be damned PROUD I so honor him if he knows what's good for him......wait, what's the frequency Kenneth?...........This just in, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull have just announced their engagement via Bonehead Spirit Channel One........CH will dress as a giant bunny for the wedding, and SB as a snapping turtle........Jerry Falwell, dressed as a giant exit wound, will preside.........)

crzhrs- "...And did anyone see the red pickup truck in the lower left corner?..."
Horse, that must be one of the Fords on the LBH River that we hear so much arguing about.

I can always count on you for a smile.
Melani, please don't take my comments wrong. If I understand what you've said in the past, you are very much like the Living Historians at Williamsburg, and I think that is excellent. It really does add to the feeling of the place to be able to ask questions of someone costumed appropriately and have them answer in the first person. I very much doubt you'd see a Living Historian at Williamsburg playing with his cell phone while on the premises.
For that matter, I doubt you'd see Snow White do it at Disney World either. It comes down to professionalism, and volunteers should either act professionally at all times they are "on stage" or accept the ridicule when they screw up. I can overlook the sizes and ages of the guys in the photo (which seem out of whack for the cavalry) but they are the ones putting themselves out there as authorities of sorts, so a certain decorum should be expected.
Red pick-up guys: This was taken in the wonderful metropolis of Garryowen. I can't tell where, but that PU truck could have been parked or it could have been gassing up. It can get pretty congested down there.

For the record, it is not my red ford f150 pickup. There may be a ford B and a ford C but there is no ford bc.
That has me thinking that we may be maligning those two sarges improperly. They are not in formation. They may have just mounted up over in the horse trailer area waiting for the ceremonies to start. If so, I hope they can take a joke.

Lets keep in mind that these two fellows in the picture posted above are not reenactors at all. They were invited to participate in the event from the Real Bird Pageant about 2 miles up the road. There are very few legitimate reenactors who participate in the Real Bird show anymore. It ceased being a real reenactment a number of years ago. Today, what we see participating at the Real Bird Pageant are tourists who pay upwards of $2000 in order to dress up (and quite poorly at that) to play "reenactor" for a week. This year, the Real Birds have brought in two separate profiteering outfits that use paying tourists and retirees to dress up as the 7th Cav. Most reenactors and serious living historians do not associate with these tourists. They are referred to as "farbs" and they fit very well the descriptions given by the acid-tongued DC. The use of the cell phone is only one of a number of egregious errors presented in the picture above. The uniform insignia is wrong on both troopers. The trooper on the left appears to be wearing a suede leather kepi cap, etc. Its about money and profit these days, not education or history. No, they are not reenactors by any stretch of the imagination, unless your imagination is shaded by a rather dark cloud.

Do the poor horses have to experience all this . . . unless there are Ford Broncos.

I caught the Remarkable Real Birds again this year. They are still lying in wait for Custer and ripping his heart out. There were 29 mounted cavalry (I counted), and maybe 70 or more Indians. The Indians all looked great. The Hardin reenactment is just pathetic. I also attended the Hardin Grand Ball as a spectator, and that was also pathetic. The costumes, especially the ladies' dresses, were mostly Civil War era, which looks very different from 1876, and badly done at that. Even Custer and Libbie looked awful--Custer was attending a fancy-dress ball in his dusty field buckskins, and Libbie's dress was--bad. I will post some photos when I get home, if any came out. There was one couple in the whole bunch who looked perfect--they are Living Historians from Virginia City.
That said, I have sympathy for somebody who is just getting into the activity and makes honest mistakes, as long as they are willing to improve. I can't count how many times I have told some weirdly-dressed lady at a Ren Faire that she looks lovely--you can always say that. When they've gone to a lot of trouble to come and play, I don't want to tell them how they've screwed up. But if they want to play seriously, I will be happy to give advice and references.
