The Black Hills Expedition will begin soon, waiting on those new model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor carbines to arrive. Don't worry, any gold discoveries will be kept VERY quiet!

I've been corresponding with the woman who created the Ella pillow. I first wrote to her to ask how she chose Ella. Her reply: "I came across an image and info about Ella when I first started making this work 5 years ago. I just thought she was beautiful and I got a kick out of the idea of otherwise intelligent men actually becoming peeping toms over her beauty."
She has read this thread and enjoyed the fun you had with the pillow. Her work is on display in Rapid City at Prairie Edge at 606 Main Street. I think some of us who attend the LBHA conference will have to take a field trip there. Your wives/girlfriends really need an Ella pillow!

And just a reminder to all who will be joining us in Rapid City, there will be a "Board Meeting" for all of us who post and read on all the Custer boards, Wed. June 29th, 7:00 PM at the Firehouse Restaurant and Brew Pub in Rapid City. Come on out and meet up for fun and maybe a hot faro game, or at least a good BBQ and Custer talk. Perry Baker, creativeaz@yahoo.com write for more info.

Was re-reading Lee's FORT MEADE AND THE BLACK HILLS, getting in the frame of mind to visit there next month. What a catalyst for chaos Ella Sturgis was, through no intent of her own. I had forgotten the details of the 7th Cav lt who killed himself over her, at least that's how they put it in the Bismarck Tribune. That was Lt. Charles M. Carrow, Company I, followed her to St. Louis on leave where she was visiting friends. There he discovered a rival for Ella's love and ended up shooting himself in his hotel room. Then, of course, the lovesick Reno and the "Peeping-Tom" incident that led to his ouster. Does anyone have the foggiest notion of what happened to her? Her nerves must have been shattered, especially over the suicide.

Ella Sturgis was my great grandmother. I have a number of her possessions including a beautiful tea set her second husband (Sir Edmund Pennington, president of the Soo line railroad) gave her as a wedding gift in 1906.
My grandmother was Nina Piper… Ella’s youngest daughter.

Thanks for that. So your G.G. Grandfather was Custer's boss and your G. Uncle died on 6/25/1876.
