Oh, I get it. Let's have fun, we'll punch each other, but we won't put all our effort into it. I'll just give you a "love tap" so you'll know I don't really mean to hurt you.
Is there something I'm missing here?
If I'm in a fight with a "friend" or an enemy . . . I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure I don't get hit and make sure I put an extra effort in making my opponent feel the pain . . . if you think fighting is just a game then I'd rather not be in the military.
Aye, you probably shouldn't. Professional Soldiers should never shirk from a fight, and they need to be good at it...the SOF guys most of all.
There really is a code to fighting. Boys fight each other often, and they don't really want to damage each other...they just want to put the other guy in his place, show who's boss, defend their dignity, revenge a disrespect, etc. But no real hurting.
Guys are good at fighting without hurting too much. You learn it in grade school. I've been in personal fights several times growing up, and each time I was very cognizant of not hurting the other guy "too much."
Soldiers NEVER go "all out" in these personal fights. Somebody would die, and nobody wants that, over what we call "Soldier fights."
This does not apply to fighting muggers, criminals, burglers, etc., most of the time (but Policemen have to be very cognizant of not hurting criminals too much in hand-to-hand combat). Soldier fights are essentially between friends and comrades, and all know not to hurt the other guy so much that you get into real criminal trouble.
BTW, fighting CAN be very fun. The popularity of boxing and WWF wrestling rather prove that. I did my mandatory boxing, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't do it well enough to stay in it...I lost all four of my bouts at West Point (but never got knocked out). I wasn't mean enough. <g>
