I stated my opinion with all of the core members privately. I have no reason to change, nor am I going to suggest to you Beth anything but what you feel is correct for the situation.

I decided its time for me to leave Reno on his hill-or perhaps to move forward in time to after Benteen Weir and all return from Weir Point. I do have some questions about that. Where were the scouts? While others were off on Weir point, were those left on the hill setting up defenses? I have seen and I've read there was a bowl like depression where they put the mules and Dr. Porter. The dip isn't very visible because of long grass but if the grass was gone how deep was it, a few inches? How many mules/horses would be there and did they do like Custer and shoot horses/mules for breastworks? Where the company defensive positions randomly assigned? I'll come up with more.

I believe most of the scouts headed home. A few hung around and Reno asked them to try to make contact with Custer later on the 25th into the early hours of the 26th. They didn't get very far and quickly returned. My understanding is the entire command moved north, pack train, injured and all. Skirmish lines were set up by Benteen when they returned. Not sure in the rest.

Beth, the depression in Reno Hill was where Dr. Porter setup his "hospital" and where the mules and horses were kept. The bowl isn't very deep and incoming fire was able to hit some of the animals, but it offered the best protection available. Sharpshooter ridge is north of the hill and there isn't much natural cover in the area, so fire from there was pretty effective until the sharpshooter was eliminated. H company was positioned at the southern end of the hill where the water carriers ravine is located, covering both to the west and east. M company connected to H and M covered the western side of the hill. K company covered the north and northeastern end of the hill, and connected at the south end of K company to D company, which connected to A company on the east side, which merged back with H. B company took over part of the position of M company at the northwest corner on the 2nd day (the 26th). The horses and mules were arranged in a circle around Dr. Porter and his makeshift hospital.
