This is one of the Code-talkers from Iwo. Picture taken just after the fall of Suribachi. The newspapers ran with guys raising the flag, thereby causing us all to miss one of the truly ironic moments of WW2.
Note that the warrior is also carrying one of Georgie Patton's pistols.

Facinating! Where was it taken? If you know that's one of Patton's pistols, there must be more to this tale..........

Alright sweetie, you got me! Seriously after studying that picture, a person would believe anything. Maybe they're dc's cross dressers.

Gordie, Clw,
That photo appeared on the cover of 'Written Heritage' book catalogue and the names given on the next page said:
" The Only Handsome Woman, wife of Dog Child (or Duck Neck- lace), a Northwest Mounted Police scout. "
The bottom of the picture was clouded so the sword didn't show that well, but you can see the gun just fine, and it certainly has a white handle.

Only in Canada would you find a scout for the Mounties with a samurai sword. Talk about your mix of cultures!!! Thanks BAB.

Frank,
the indian with the samurai sword is Dog Child, a Blackfoot/Blackfeet. If my information is correct, it was made in 1890.

I think his wife (I assume) is far more impressive!
Still the sword is intriguing . . .

Interesting Photo..... He must have picked that up from being a performer in Buffalo Bill's wild West Show, or some other similar show. That's be my best guess, since the photo was taken in the 1890's.

Hello Frank and all, I found this info which I hope will help. "Dog Child's history is recorded in more detail in Adolph Hungry Wolf's 1973 book THE Blood People. Hungry Wolf, a white man adopted by the Blood people, was able to gather a large body of information about the Bloods through archival research and from community elders. Dog Child's son, George First Rider, provided a biographical sketch. We learn that Dog Child's wife's name was The Only Handsome Woman. A portrait of the couple, taken in 1939 by Ester Goldfrank, accompaniees the text. Dog Child's father's name was Holy Descent and his mother's name was Under Making Noise. Dog Child also had three brothers: Stripped Wolf, Mistaken Chief and Shoot at Close Range. As a North West Mounted Plice scout, Dog Child's job was to protect the borders of the Blood Reserve, checking for trespassers and illegal liquor traffic. "Through this job, my father learned to speak English, working in the white way" Dog Child was also a well-known doctor (medicine man) and worked in this capacity until his death in 1948. He belonged to the Black Seizers warrior society (the ones who tear our clothes). The Seizers were well known for demanding contributions of food from the community for their society gatherings, and if refused, had a right to tear up the clothing of the refuser.' www.lac-bac.ca/aboriginal-portraits/luminance/05010107_e.htmlLuminance-Aboriginal photographic portraits Library and Archives Canada (good website) I am a new member and I am not a native English speaker, so please be kind to me.
