Elisabeth, Years ago, my grandmother gave me a printed copy of our family coat of arms from England and was accompanied with text that said that our family ancestors controlled, operated and maintained the hunting parks of England and some of them were arms makers also, from the 1700s, making arms for England and still manufactures hunting arms currently. It said they were from the "Cumberland area" if I remember correctly. Where would that be in England ? I ran across an article in an antique arms magazine years later, and it had an article about the English arms makers and was accompanied with photos of cased engraved flintlock dueling pistols made by our family ancestors with the family name engraved on the lock plates and barrels His address in the London Directory was listed as being in the "High Holborn" area. ( Gun maker for her Majesty, No. 233 High Holborn ) I was amazed at the style of engraving on the arms that were illustrated in the article, since the style was very similar to mine ( I engrave as a hobby at times when I'm in the mood for it ) I don't know if this trait was something that I inherited by genes or what, but it is a very remarkable similar style. Since you are in England, I thought that you might be interested in some of the details of my ancestor sand could possibly give me some additional information as to locations, etc. Thanks......

Jimbo, That's fascinating. I just did some swift Googling; would this be them? tinyurl.com/2arwslCumberland is in the north-west of England, and much of it is very beautiful -- the area known as the Lake District. (Where the poet Wordsworth came from.) High Holborn is just to the east of the current commercial heart of London (the shops of Oxford Street, Regent Street and so on) and runs through the middle of what I suppose could be called the legal district -- where all the Inns of Court are, and where barristers [top attorneys] have their chambers [offices]. Nice area, steeped in history. I'd be delighted to see if I can find out more, if you like. Maybe I could even send you a photo of the High Holborn premises, if I can remember to take my camera with me next time I'm in London! Want to PM/e-mail me more details, such as names and any dates you've got?
