For those interested, there's a brief pictorial essay on the Nez Perce at www.windriverhistory.org/exhibits/chiefjoseph/chiefjoseph01.htmDoesn't answer your question, I know, Dietmar. Sorry. I've seen this photo before, but not with any identification other than the man at the right is Jospeh. While we're on the subject, I don't have much on the Nez Perce, but I've never come across a photo of White Bird either. He's certainly not in the Greene book and if anyone would have one, I thought he might.

YELLOW WOLF: born in 1856 in Nez Percè tribe, "Wal Lam Wat Kin" band, nephew of Chief Joseph. Indian's name: HEMENE MOXMOX. He has become famous in 1877 war. Always present in every battle, he was one of more daring and combative warriors. In June 1878 he surrended. He died in 21 August 1935 in Nespelem (Washington) and buried near the great uncle. In the first years of 1900 he dictated his memories to L. McWhorter, that wrote a famous book printed first time in 1940. P.S. Diane, can you to reduce a little the image? It's seems too large and not clear. Thank you.

Great Sages,i still need you.I have asked to DIANE to post an interesting image of Nez Percè chiefs.I am only sure of the man in the middle: he is OLLOKUT (or ALIKUT), a great warrior, Chief Joseph's brother. The other two are uncertain. I have two different informations: 1) EAGLE OF LIGHT (at left) and SMOHOLLAH (at right) 2) BILLY CARTER (at left) and MIDDLE BEAR (at right) The photo was taken by Charles W. Phillips in 1877 (?) Of this uncertain chiefs, i only have informations on EAGLE OF LIGHT, an important and no-treaty chief. The others are unknowed to me. Can anyone help me? Thanks

Ciao Charlie, where have you been so long? I can´t help you much on this. The identification of Billy Carter and Middle Bear comes from Bill Gulick, who wrote the book "Chief Joseph´s Country - Land of the Nez Perce" (1981). He gives no sources, nor does he mention both names in his text. On the original photograph you can find the inscription with Eagle of Light and Smohollah aka The Dreamer. Ollokot was the war leader of the Wallowa band of Nez Perces. Smohallah was the founder of the Dreamer cult during the 1860s. Greetings to Italy Dietmar

"Smohalla, an Indian prophet and teacher, the originator of a religion current among the tribes of the upper Columbia River and adjacent region in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, whence the name "Smohallah Indians" sometimes applied. The name, properly Shmoqŭla, signifies "The Preacher," and was given to him after he became prominent as a religious reformer. He belonged to the Sokulk, a small tribe cognate to the Nez Percé and centering about Priest rapids on the Columbia in eastern Washington. He was born about 1815 or 1820, and in his boyhood frequented a neighboring Catholic mission, from which he evidently derived some of his ceremonial ideas. He distinguished himself as a warrior, and began to preach about the year 1850. Somewhat later, in consequence of a quarrel with a rival chief, he left home secretly and absented himself for a long time, wandering as far south as Mexico and returning overland through Nevada to the Columbia. On being questioned he declared that he had been to the spirit world and had been sent back to deliver a message to the Indian race. This message, like that of other aboriginal prophets, was, briefly, that the Indians must return to their primitive mode of life, refuse the teachings or the things of the white man, and in all their actions be guided by the will of the Indian God as revealed in dreams to Smohalla and his priests. The doctrine found many adherents, Chief Joseph and his Nez Percé being among the most devoted believers. Smohalla has recently died, but, in spite of occasional friction with agency officials, the "Dreamers," as they are popularly called, maintain their religious organization, with periodical gatherings and an elaborate ceremony." See Mooney, Ghost Dance Religion, 14th Rep. B. A. E., 1896. alleged photo of Smohallah

I can only speak for myself, but I believe this forum is for everyone interested, not only for experts. There are people here I can´t compete with either.
Frank promised to return, I hope he will.

In McWhorter's Yellow Wolf, the identity of the man on our right is given as Wetyetmas Likleinen. No translation given, but it says he's a relative of Ollokot. The man on the left has been cropped in this instance. It is claimed the photo was taken in Washington in 1876.

Are there other photos of Nez Perce taken in Washington in 1878 or 9 (by Bell, I assume)? I've only seen two: Yellow Bull (as seen in Jerome Greene's book on the Nez Perce War) and Joseph: Below, for good measure,. is another picture of Joseph allegedly taken in 1878 or 9 with his family in Kansas:

Thanks GRAHAMEW for your post. Then, the man at left in my photo is uncertain...My infos on EAGLE FROM THE LIGHT are: He belonged to Lam'tama band. Indian name: TIPIYELEHNE KA AWPO. He always was enemy to the White and refused to signed the Treaty of 1855 and 1861. He definitively left his territiory on Salmon River (two miles south of Corvallis) in 1875 with part of his band, and did settle down in Weiser County (Montana), joined with Shoshone Chief's Eagle's Eye. The leadership of the other Lam'tama that rested on the Salmon River was took by old chief White Bird. Eagle From the Light don't partecipated at the War of 1877 because he was too far. Date of death is unknown. If the photo was taken in 1876 (Washington D.C. or Washington State?) is possible that our Man is truly him....I should be very happy to see a photo of Eagle From The Light: he was a fighting chief, such as like to me.....

If Eagle From The Light is the man at the left (our left), then he looks quite young for someone who was prominent in 1855, although perhaps he had a father of the same name.
