Hi, my name is Jayne Humphrey Pearce and I am on the board of the Fort Wallace Museum here in Wallace, Kansas. I've had a long-time interest in Civil War history and have delved more deeply into Indian War history since moving to Western Kansas. My husband and I are professional musicians and at one point did a historical show on Captain Albert Barnitz and his wife Jennie. Thanks for your interesting website. I will explore it further as time allows.

Greetings.... My name is Steven Wright. I am a librarian in Philadelphia, although I spent 20+ years in the field of history, including working for various museums and the NPS. While the Civil War was my "bread and butter" for many years I always had an interest in the Indian Wars and the Little Big Horn. I've been to the battlefield several times and spoken to the CBMH&MA a couple of times (some time ago!). While I've only poked around this forum a bit, I'm very impressed with the depth of knowledge of the members and look forward to the commaradery that is shared.

Welcome aboard Jayne & Steve. Pardon the ruckus but "spring fever" seems to have struck, especially in Switzerland . Jayne, good to know another Kansan is on the board, although at opposite sides of the state. Steve, oh buddy, old pal! A librarian, historian and you live in Philly? I can taste the hoagies, cheese-steaks and fresh seafood now! I will look you up the next time the wife & sister-in-law force me to leave my barricaded cellar and go there on one of their visits home (this poor southern boy did not know what he was getting into marrying a Philly-girl!). Best of wishes, Billy

Hi to all. I am Lawtonka I use the name Lawtonka to remember the best place I ever lived in my life, which was Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Nearby was Lake Lawtonka where I spent many days fishing, boating, and hiking around Mount Scott. Fort Sill is one of the few old frontier forts still active, and has much history about it and the last days of Geronimo. I guess this is where I developed my interest in the Indian Wars and the old army.
Been to LBH I think 4 times altogether and it is a place I never get tired of.
Happily married now for 34 years. Two sons, an old Bay Mare, and a Boxer.
I am a member of CBHMA since 1985, Friends of the LBH now for several months, and a frequent visitor to this wonderful website.
I enjoy the discussions and information shared on this site very much.
My passions are of course history, photography, writing, reading, hiking, traveling, just to name a few.

El Crab:
I read your earlier post. It reads nicely.
However, I wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong impression of "our" group.
You didn't have to "weasel your way in or use your rodent (?) like skills" to get an invite to join us for our trip to the LBH and tour with Fox.
Bubbabod and Gary Lemery discussed it with me and we decided to just "invite" you along. There was no "weaseling" involved. We "aint" that type of people.
I just had to make sure that Dr. Fox was up to handling one more in the group, there were 4 of us, which, after explaining to him that I would like you to join us, he graciously agreed.
I am glad you had such a good time. We all, also enjoyed it.
Again, I wouldn't want forum members to think we, in any way, made you "squirm" to be invited. Quite the contrary.

Greetings to all Here goes my first post. Wahoo! What a great idea to give us an opportunity to find out about each other. As for me, think “Newbie,” then move several paces back. There you will find “Novice.” I am a couple of steps behind that. What’s a coulee?? While perusing your comments, I can’t help but realize what an incredible journey this will be for me! I can sample various ideas/interpretations along the way while moving toward my never-to-be reached and elusive destination: complete truth about LBH. This will not, however, deter me from enjoying this addictive subject and the twist and turns of my journey! Although I am a born and raised Texan, I now reside in the land of snow-capped mountains viewed through the palm trees in my front yard. Can you guess where that is? I enjoyed a wonderful career in employment, training and organizational development. I recently took an early retirement (thanks to county pensions) and now wonder when I ever had time to work. I was a military wife for 22 years and followed my “warrior bold” from pillar to post including four years in Madrid Spain and three years in Japan. I caught “Custer/LBH/Libbie fever” while on a wonderful trip to Montana, Wyoming and Black Hills last October. I tried aspirin and Excedrin but, alas, the fever has not subsided. I am just scratching the surface and that’s why I joined LBHA. Follow the experience and knowledge, I always say. I am impressed with the generosity of spirit with which you share information and book recommendations with others. This allows me to listen, learn and sift through all the information at my own pace. As I am the ONLY one in my circle who has the “fever,” I depend on the LBHA boards for my “fix.” Finally, thanks to our Web Goddess Extraordinaire, Diane. She made me feel very welcome (even though she roots for that other football team). Everyone, keep up the good work and Garryowen!

Welcome aboard, YellowRose!
I'm guessing you're either in the Palm Springs/Indio area or perhaps Tucson. Maybe Salt Lake City ... indeed, the GAC/LBH experience becomes addictive to the extreme! I try to remember back just a few years ago when it mattered not ... you'll find a lot of great contributors here, and like everyone else, they're after the truth; well, their version of it! Though you are a newbie, just remember the only stupid questions are the ones never asked.
Have you done a lot of reading on the subject? What's your favorite so far?
Regards, Leyton McLean

Daniel Kanipe was my great-grandfather's (Elias Franklin Kanipe) younger brother. I found this website looking for anything related to Daniel. To my knowledge, I am the only relative in the Tampa, Florida area. Many of my Kanipe relatives, not that there are that many there anymore, live in East Tennessee. My mother's maiden name is Kanipe; it is her lineage that ties into Daniel Kanipe. She is the last living grandchild of Elias, Daniel's brother. None of the Tennessee relatives knew of Daniel Kanipe's exploits with Custer until about four years ago when a cousin began tracing the Kanipe lineage. Also, I didn't know until it was too late that there was an auction of some of Daniel's possessions. I would love to have, or even see, something that was his.

Welcome!
I remember that auction -- it wasn't too long ago -- and I believe we have some information on it on one of these boards. It must be heartbreaking to know that you might have acquired something that belonged to your GG-Granduncle (I think I have that right) had you known of the auction.
There's quite a bit of controversy about him, as I'm sure you know. We'll be glad to have your contributions.

Thank you for answering. I am curious about the controversy you spoke of. I've read the official army document that relays Daniel's story about the aftermath of the battle, but not much else. Anything (articles, etc.) you can direct me to would be appreciated.
I would also like to see the battleground some day. Do you know if there is anything about Daniel at the battleground?

The controversy involves whether Kanipe actually was a messanger and, if so, what exactly was the message. If you will go to the Custeriana Queries board and run a search for Kanipe (the Search button is above the word Subject), you can see all of the times he's been mentioned in various threads. If you'd rather start with threads in context, look at the "Benteen's Orders" and "Betrayal at LBH: Robert Utley Speaks" threads in the Custeriana Boards. There is also a thread called "Kanipe's Message" on the Battle Basics board. Several articles have been published about Kanipe in LBHA publications. You can see that list at www.lbha.org/Sales/topics/DanielKanipe.htm. The second article may be of particular interest because, as I recall, the auction was in North Carolina so it may have been Kanipe's son's (or grandson's) estate. The third article is by John Mackintosh who frequents these boards. He is traveling now but should be home soon. Perhaps John can suggest books for you. The Research Review articles should be fully sourced, so I'm sure the citations would be helpful with books as well.

I found info on the auction. Scroll down towards the end of this article: www.maineantiquedigest.com/articles/dec05/brunk1205.htm. If you'll click the link to Brunks Auctions, you'll see that it doesn't appear they have past auctions linked on their home page. They invite people to contact them, and I think you should. They should have photos and documentation of the auction. Perhaps they'll be kind enough to share them with you. Good luck!
