Fort Harker was established in present day Ellsworth Kansas in 1864 as Fort Ellsworth. There are several buildings still there. It served as a western frontier military post for about 10 years.

Thought I'd let the locals know of Fort Harker Days this weekend, Friday evening and Saturday, July 10 & 11, 2009. Some type of meeting Friday night with the descendents of the Forsyth Scouts (who ended up at the battle of Beecher's Island) who are having a reunion with hamburger feed at 6:00 pm. and the main program starting at 7:00 with the scouts. Fort Harker tours start at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and there is a parade at 10:00 am. A tour of old Fort Ellsworth (or I assume the field where it was at) and old frontier Ellsworth begins at 1:30 p.m. There will be food vendors and a carnival. For info call Jim Gray at 785-531-2058. We expect to be there during or after lunch for the tour. Later at 7:30 p.m. on Sat., 7-11-09 in Lincoln, Lincoln County, KS, Jeff Broome will be giving a presentation regarding Susan Alderdice, etc. and have new copies of the just printed second edition of Dog Soldier Justice, the story of Susanna Alderdice for sale and signing. He also wrote Custer into the West which I assume he will also have there as he had both books at the LBHA book room and the front porch of Putt's Trading Post available for sale and signing. We expect to be there as well. Kansas cowboys can probably find more information at www.droversmercantile.com which by the way, the C.O.W.B.O.Y. (Cockeyed Old West Band of Yahoos) Society puts out an excellent bi-monthly publication called the Kansas Cowboy (around 24 pages of newsprint). bc
