I understand a number of historians have questioned some of Miller's interviews, I guess alluding to the possibility that he made some up. I don't know enough on the man to comment about that but I do like his paintings. Some were featured in Union Pacific Railroad ads I believe in the 1930's.

My opinion of David Miller is that he was an honest, sincere, but enthusiastic interpreter of events as offered by the Native Americans. To disregard all of his findings would be throwing the baby out with the bath water. His efforts should be appreciated but, carefully appraised. by the reader.
For example, Miller describes the shooting of a soldier who subsequently fell from his mount into the river, as an important clue to the identity of the victim . He attributes the immediate attempts by the soldiers comrades to rescue their fallen comrade to signify the importance/rank of the individual as possibly being Custer himself.
Such a conclusion without significant evidence belies credibility regarding that particular point..

Miller was influenced by a personal need to be right, about everything, every time, regardless of actual facts.
