clw, the lbha.proboards reference you give appears to lead only back to the home page so I have not been able to see what it is you have discovered. Any further info would be appreciated. Michael's post seems to indicate that he has either read or remembers some comments by Connell about the Indians having captives from Crook's command. I hope he will cite chapter and page numbers as I cannot find it and it's very frustrating. My idea that it might have been one of the two Reno 'bolters' might hold good for the movie director's imagination, but is a non-starter in reality as on page 13 of SOTMS the author says, "Four horses bolted out of formation, carrying their desperate riders toward the Sioux. Two of these men regained control and got back. The other two - Pvts. George Smith and James Turley - rode on into the Uncpapa village where they were caught, dragged from the saddle, stabbed, beaten, chopped up."Perhaps this was too gory for a TV mini-series and a captive seemed a reasonable alternative. Only the director knows! Hunk

I have no idea if the child was intended to be a depiction of a captive, or was just one of the Hollywood extras that wasn't Indian. Movieland gets away with some amazing stuff: Digital watches on Civil War slave children and flower delivery trucks speeding along with Braveheart's attack on the English and such."It's a quick shot. No one will notice." Not having reckoned on Beer Maiden Bab. M Sorry, Broken Lance, I guess I had one beer tee many, but I could have sworn that the little girl had RED hair! Slosh Bucket Bab

And then there is always poetic license when doing a movie, especially a movie based on historic fact.
While SOMS is probably the most acurate depicting of the LBH and surround events, there are some holes in it, especially the white scout Mr. Rivers. We know there was a Charley Reynolds. Did the director/writer make a mistake?
It's not out of the question that soldier(s) were dragged into the village. Whether they were still alive is another matter.

Hi Hunk and Bab-
As I said I 'think' I read something in the book about the possibility of white captives in the camp. The author seemed to argue with himself about a number of things in its pages. I no longer have the book and can't check it out. It may just as well have been remembered from an interview with the director or cast members that the little extra something was mentioned as being added. Hollywood types often read a script and become instant experts on the script's subject matter. Geez, it was years ago anyway.
Unlike clw, I do not have Alzheimer's moments (yet), but DO suffer from Oldtimer's on occasion.
Bab you may well be right about the red headed 'step-child' who was being whisked away in the same scene. All I was saying was that cast and crew members often use their own children for minor extras in films they are working on, and why not? It pays to know someone, as they say. Also keep in mind, that screen captures from TV are prone to false color along with other imaging imperfections.
Michael, or whatever my name is

Hunk, I'll try to hunt it down again. It worked when I posted it because I double checked it. It must have something to do with the software upgrade.
I'm pleased to hear that Gary Cole enjoyed his riding. And I enjoyed his portrayal of GAC, even though I think it was too dark. But poor Mr Cole never got the hang of how to sit a horse! That my be the thing that bothered me most about the whole film -- his riding is atrocious.

Yep. 'Art' has been defined by some as, "A lie that leads us closer to the truth."

*http://lbha.proboards12.com/v45index.cgi?action=display&board=lbhbooks&thread=1827&page=2* Above is the only way it will accept the url. Even if I don't use the url tags, it shortens it with dots in the middle. So you'll have to cut and paste it. Not that there's any major information there. It's just where I got the idea about the Rosebud captive -- it seems it was my own to begin with. Cast members kids in film.... The Music Man, 76 Trombones number, kid in the front line who can't dance and keeps looking at the other kids to try and figure out where to put her feet. That HAD to me somebody's cousin.

"Could someone address the fact that the 'person' in the foreground of that picture is holding what appears to be a little 'white' girl? I don't recall reading anywhere that a white child was taken hostage at LBH "
And look how thw kid's dressed.
It's a while since I've watched this, but I seem to recall a scene of Indians running out of camp used twice - briefly in both occasions. I wonder if this was meant to show something that happened later at lbh and it was edited in here - somewhat carelessly - to beef up the action and help convey the sense of panic and anger. As for the kid, who knows?

On the subject of this movie does anyone know exactly where it was shot and the locations' proximity to the actual battlefield?

It was filmed in the Badlands National Park in (of all places) South Dakota. Due North of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

It was filmed in the Badlands National Park in (of all places) South Dakota. Why "(of all places)"? Is that a crack? Are you a sodakophobic? I'll have you know, sir, that one of my wife's favorite people (at least, I think I am) lives in beautiful South Dakota. ( She, however, doesn't. Long story. Don't ask.) Cease and desist (as opposed to stand and deliver) or I shall be forced to demand satisfaction! People who live in southern mansions shouldn't throw peach pits, you know... cefil
