Well, folks, the new webcams are finally online and what a view we have. These are great close up shots of Last Stand Hill (Indian Memorial and 7th Cavalry Monument) and Deep Ravine Trail and National Cemetery. You’ll see the fresh snow as of December 5, 2005. Go to the Friends of the Little Bighorn website -- www.friendslittlebighorn.com -- and you can't miss the links. The views refresh every five minutes. Cams are supposed to pan over the scenes, so depending on when you look at it you might see something or see sky. It's all new and I'm sure there are still some bugs that need to be dealt with.

If you see nothing but gray or black when you look at the webcam views, chances are good that the cam is currently panning. Try refreshing the screen and if no change wait a few minutes. It might take at least five minutes for the camera to finish panning to the new view before it's back online again.
Right now, I see a great view of the Deep Ravine Trail. It’s obviously gray skies, foggy, and snowing right now so you won’t be able to see as much.
Enjoy!!

I just got off the phone with Ken Woody and they need to still do a few fixes. The camera is panning too quickly, and its ability to refresh needs to be tweaked. Three different groups are involved in resolving this – both NPS and outside services. Some of those people won’t be available until Friday. So, we will only be looking at one view instead of different panned views for a week or so.
The cameras are color – right now they look like black and white because it’s gray and snowing.
It shouldn't matter whether you're using a Mac or not, Elizabeth. The link is via a URL. Try refreshing in a few minutes and I think you should be able to see it even on your Mac.

Not to steal Bob's thunder, but the webcams are available on the home page of this website also!
LBHA made a contribution to the webcams. If you enjoy seeing the views, please let the LBHA Board of Directors know so that they will continue to support the National Park Service and similar efforts spearheaded by the Friends group.

Bob,
I can see it now (and it's great!). It must have been my computer playing up.

Amazing! I just saw a view that literally dated from two minutes earlier. It's late, and I saw dark, snow, and lights in the distance. Technology is truly wonderful.

All--
The new and improved webcams are quite nice. I printed a rather dramatic sunset shot with the Native American Memorial in the background for my "corner of inspiration." However, it appears the Last Stand Hill camera is now stuck on a view of Deep Ravine trail (that's at least what it looks like through all of the snow) and has been since Tuesday or so. Last night, the sun was still blinding me at 21.30 local time! The National Cemetary camera is looping about rather well ...
Great, great job! Fills that inherent need to visit Montana ... ! Leyton McLean

Update to webcams –
I just got off the phone with Ken Woody regarding the new webcams. Progress has been outstanding. Most of the bugs have been corrected and we now have these views to enjoy:
For the Last Stand Hill webcam we will see the Indian Memorial, 7th Cavalry Monument and markers inside the fence, Battle Ridge, and a beautiful view of Weir Point.
For the Deep Ravine webcam we see the trail, the National Cemetery, and a zoom view toward the LBH valley.
The cameras are programmed to pan to one of the above views and hold for five minutes. It’ll then pan to the next position and freeze on it for five minutes and so forth. So, remember to refresh your screen every five minutes for the next view.
If need be, the camera can be reprogrammed to focus on other areas inside the Monument so if any special occasion takes place the view can be established.
BTW – the color is working for the cameras as well.

Bhist--
Thanks for keeping up with the cameras--nothing like calling the man in charge. Brilliant shots today, especially of the obelisk on Last Stand Hill. The view to the west is also nice ... I keep thinking Benteen is STILL over there on those hills, looking. I've given the address information to an associate of mine whose parents are buried in the National Cemetery ... it's nice to know he'll be able to keep an "eye" on them, so to speak.
I really enjoy the sunrise/sunset shots ... hmmm ... sounds like the name of a song!
Happy holidays, Leyton McLean
