Written by Rufus Dawes who raised a company of men at the start of the Civil War and eventually became colonel of the 6th Wisconsin. An excellent eyewitness account. The 6th Wisconsin was part of the famous Iron Brigade which was under the command of John Gibbon for awhile. The 6th was involved in all the major battles in the eastern theater of the war and suffered heavy casualties.

Staying on the subject of Wisconsin troops, are you aware of anything published dealing with the Wisconsin troops stationed in the west during the CW? I know that the 3d & 4th WI Cav. as well as the 30th WI Infantry were in the west at times and there very well may have been others. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks, Billy

Sorry for the delay in replying-I don't have a computer at home so I only have internet access at work or the library. I don't know of any specific histories of the regiments you mentioned but the State of Wisconsin published a book listing rosters of all Wisconsin units and another giving brief histories of their service. My great-great grandfather served in Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri with the 9th Wisconsin Infantry for three years. Must have been some l o n g marches across the prairie!
