I came up with a brilliant idea (well, I think this about everything I do, but...) for a thread while informing Diane of a potential error in the LBHA.org's roster listings.
Here's the idea: I post a hint about a soldier or civilian or scout or whatever, and you people guess who I am referring to. Billy Markland is probably going to dominate us all, but I digress. I think I will post a hint per day, until someone gets it. Then it can begin again, either by me or someone else. Start a new thread, and a new "Who Am I" thread should not begin until the previous one is solved.
Anyway, I've got a good one lined up, so here goes...
*Solved by stevewilk*
I am about 6 inches shorter than the average soldier in the 7th US Cavalry.
I was born in the US.
I had served less than two years with the Seventh when I was killed at Little Big Horn.
I was born 30 years after my home state's birthday.
I am: John Heim, Private, E Company. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1851. I was 5'1" and I was a clerk before enlisting in January, 1875.
I am not:
Tom Thumb John Martin Daniel Kanipe Nathan Short Verne Troyer (Mini Me) Benny Hodgson John Patton Elizabeth Custer

I know, I know!
But I won't answer because El Crab gave me another clue when he was chastising me for believing Hammer.
BTW, for those who annotate their books, Hammer's listing at the top for James Hill is wrong. Hill died in Wooster, OHIO, not Wooster, Massachusetts. I'll be updating the website listing soon. Thanks, Crab!

Nope, so far, no one is right. And thanks, Diane, I knew you'd get it, and was correct in that you would excuse yourself from this contest because of it...
Hint #2:
I was born in the US.

There are at least three possibilities, depending on the source. The book _They Died With Custer_ lists the shortest trooper as Pvt. William Gray , Co. G, as being five feet three quarter inches tall. Gray was not present at the battle, on detached service. However, Hammer in _Men With Custer_ lists Gray's height at five feet six and three quarter.
Two other possibilites are the 5'1" inch Pvt. John Heim, KIA, Co. E, or Pvt. Edward Stout, B Co.; although Hammer lists him at 5'11".
So take your pick.
BTW, Treasurdude, Hammer has Kanipe at 5'11".

BTW, Treasurdude, Hammer has Kanipe at 5'11". LOL. I was in such a hurry to post, I guessed and then checked my books. Yeah, Kanipe would have been on the tall side in the 7th.

Nope. Is it Elizabeth Custer, Crab? Nope. Ack, I made a slight error. New Hint: I had served less than two years with the Seventh when I was killed at Little Big Horn.

'I had served less than a year with the Seventh when I was killed at Little Big Horn. '
Well that's Libbie and any other individual not actually serving with the 7th out the frame!

And what the heck, another hint. Two for the price of one...
I was born 30 years after my home state's birthday.
