Fred, regarding Utley, no need for a "mea culpa" since I don't have a single book by him about LBH. However, if the house caught on fire and I had a choice to pick out certain books to save, his Frontier Regulars would be my first choice.
Regarding LBH...who doesn't change their minds about what happened?

You’re so right about choosing carefully what books you buy and reviewing the index and such before buying. I do the same thing. Heck, I do that with about any purchase I make from a movie ticket to a travel location. I can’t stand paying to see a movie that I end up hating. You might visit off and on the Book Review section of the Friends website – the link is above in my earlier post. Since my time is very limited, the only books I’ll be adding to that section are ones that I find worthwhile. I feel confident that the majority of our visitors would benefit from any of those books.
Now, to some of the great points you made. I do find it interesting your comment about Utley on television and the opinion you garnered from that. I’m glad you mentioned that because all the people interviewed for those programs have no control over the editing and content. I saw a program over the last few years on cable about the digs at LBH – it was one of two that focused on Fox’s theory. Through nifty editing the producers made it appear that Scott agreed completely with Fox that the last stand actually took place in Deep Ravine instead of on Last Stand Hill. In some emails traded with Scott I asked him if he changed his mind – Scott advised he had not. But, to the average viewer, one would think that.
Utley hasn’t written a book on the LBH. He covers it in many of his books but it is just one aspect of a bigger subject he covers. Treasuredude already mentioned one of Utley’s’ that does cover in great detail the battle and that’s “Cavalier in Buckskin.” I agree with him, that is a great book. Another classic Utley discusses the controversies of the LBH – “Custer and the Great Controversy.” And, then you might want to get a copy of his “Custer Battlefield Handbook” that he wrote for the NPS.

Utley, Greene, Mangum, and I are having a blast trading stories regarding the Luce footage I’m editing. What doesn’t surprise me is how much time and effort Greene is giving me in helping identify people in the footage. There is one scene that I hope turns out to be what he suspects – there are two gentlemen knelling beside Custer’s marker and talking (this footage is from the 50s so there is no sound). Problem is the film is old with a lot of faded color and poor contrast, so these men’s faces cannot be seen. The software I’m using enables me to enhance the film – bring out more of the color, improve the contrast and brightness. As a result, I’ve been able to reveal the two men’s faces. I have no idea who they are, but Greene will review this enhance footage again. Maybe then we’ll know for sure if these are the men I hope they are. Why? Because, I don’t think there is any footage (let alone photos) of these men. Only reason why I won’t say who they might be is I could disappoint a lot of people if it isn’t them, and yes, I’ll admit, I’m hoping to create some suspense so people might be interested in attending the Friends fundraiser where they will see the film. Point is Greene is not only a great historian, but also a very nice person and very giving of his expertise.
What makes forums like this so beneficial is you can ask all of us such questions about historians and their books. Chances are good someone will be able to address the questions. Imagine if this opportunity were not here – you might very well miss out on some valuable reading.

You-- along w/ the prodding from some earlier posts-- have convinced me. Unfortunately, now I am going to have to go out & scrounge up some of Utley's & Greene's works. That will probably set my timetable back a bit, but give me a lot of fun on the way.

I agree that Utley's CAVALIER IN BUCKSKIN and FRONTIER REGULARS are excellent books and his bio on Sitting Bull (The Lance and the Shield) is another book worth reading . . . many insights on the life of Sitting Bull from young warrior to his final days.

A few things in the Sitting Bull-bio puzzled me. A serious study of his life was well overdue and there's a well of information in it that I, as a non-scholar, wouldn't have known elsewhere but it's not the best I've read by him.
"Frontier Regulars" and "The Last Days of the Sioux Nation" (also dealing with mr. Bull) are essential though.
