 Primary Sources
« Thread Started on Jun 1, 2012, 10:35am »

Greetings,

I'm interested in finding primary sources concerning Custer's time with the 7th after the Civil War. I have a copy of the Barnitz letters edited by Utley, and I am aware of George and his wife's published works. I also have a copy of the Benteen-Goldin letters. Any other journals, diaries, letters, etc... I can get my hands on?

Thanks

Yes... get a copy of Sandy Barnard's book, Ten Years With Custer, the diary of Sergeant John Ryan. You can buy it from Sandy, direct. Ten years is all she wrote!

Best wishes,
Fred.

"The Custer Story" edited by Marguerite Merington contains "The Life and Intimate Letters of General George A. Custer and His Wife Elizabeth" although the letters are edited by Merrington to suit her own sensibilities - those of the society of her time.

Also, if you can obtain copies, there is the correspondence from GAC whilst on the 1876 campaign.

Good hunting.

nachos, I have overlooked the very good "Elizabeth Bacon Custer and the Making of a Myth" by Shirley Leckie. It covers the Civil War period as well but is well stocked with extracts from their personal correspondence. Should help you a lot.
